Elegance coral show off thread

Yeah, and aussie, had it for about 2.5 months now. Seems to be doing really well, except that it is a snail mass murderer. I don't know how I'm going to afford to keep replacing snails. I've lost about 15-20 in the last month.

Thats a great sign for your elegance though!

I stopped adding new snails a while ago, and just let the stomatella snails reproduce in my tank, which my elegance still takes out on a regular basis. If you go back a couple/few pages in this thread I managed to get a couple decent pics of mine eating stomatella snails off of the glass.

Hey guys can I do a fresh water dip to kill flat worms? I have my elegance for a year now but it has a lot of FW on it. It seems that it's the only coral with the problem.

here is my aussie - coming up on a year soon

I saw that, it was really cool. I've caught mine in the same act with a turbo and another type of snail but didn't have my camera charged.

Here was a picture of my elegance coral almost a year ago:

You guys wanna see something CRAZY???!!!

I witnessed this last night and was able to snap a couple pics. Check this out:

Yeah. That thing is eating Stomatella snails off of the glass!!!

I couldn't believe it. In this pic you can see the one hes holding on to towards the top left, and if you look towards the bottom left, you'll notice hes got another one. He ended up ripping these two poor souls off of the glass and eating them.

stunreefer,

I have noticed that there has been an accumulation of empty turbo snail shells right next to my elegance coral. I can only see the shells at night when the elegance is not expanded all the way. And I am talking pretty big snails:

theres two more behind the elegance that I dont have a pic of.

Yep, mine did the same thing. It would sting the snail and either kill it and eat it or drag it close so that it couldn't get away without getting stung and would eventually get stung and eaten anyway.

Here is mine now (8 months):

Do the snails just get too close and they eat them??
Yep! :p

ReefEnabler - Your elegance is looking great! Its really settling in now (notice how long the tentacles are!) ... I bet its really sticky to the touch as well; Another sure sign that they're thriving.

Gotta love the Snail Graveyard!

Here is mine...only had it for 5 days.

Elegence1.jpg

Its in a 20 gallon tank, plumbed into my 120 reef. Lit by a 175w Hamilton bulb. It was under a 250w 10k bulb of unknown make in the store. Looked slightly bleached, but was open about as much as it is now. It had been in the store for about 2 weeks. Not very sticky right now, but it has been eating. Its about 6-7 inches in length. The tips are white with a faint hint of pink, although that could be wishful thinking on my part. Will the tips color up when the coral gets more sticky and more acclimated?

I've noticed at night it really retracts into the skeleton, a couple of hours after lights out. Is this a normal thing...My branching hammer doesnt retract to the same degree.

Nick

my elegance goes through many different phases. sometimes it will fully retract at night time for a week every night.... then it goes months without retracting very much at all.

and then it also has phases where it doesn't expand all the way during daytime for 2-3 days. I've learned not to freak out every time the elegance doesn't expand.

I'd get worried if it didn't expand for more than a few days, or if it gets the "bloated mouth, shrunken tentacles" look more than anything.

I've seen the bloated body, shrunken tentacles thing before in the past with other Elegence corals I've seen locally...that's why I didnt buy them.

Thanks,

Nick

i just bought me an aussie elegance and today its was shrivled up with white slime coming out....should i be worried? its been 3 days and i fed it on the 2nd day with silverside

what kind of lighting do you have it under?

might just be the coral purging itself of some thing... but I would hope that wouldn't be zooxanthalae...

well today i checked and its back to the normal look like how it was at the LFS. But its doesnt blow up like the ones i see in this thread.....still eats like a champ though...whats zooxanthalae??
