...whats zooxanthalae??

The algae which live captured inside the corals tissue, providing the corals with simple food (sugars) through the process of photosynthesis...

Zooxanthalae is the reason we need intense lighting over our reef tanks...

Will the tips color up when the coral gets more sticky and more acclimated?

I've noticed at night it really retracts into the skeleton, a couple of hours after lights out. Is this a normal thing...My branching hammer doesnt retract to the same degree.
Looks great Nick!

The tips will probably not change color, they might depending on food provided. Mine has a faint hint of pink in it, and I hoped that over time it would become brighter but it has remained the same, even with very nutritional foods.

Regardng being "sticky," I believe its a hunting mechanism as well as a sign of good health. Its a sign of good health in that its wanting to hunt (eat); Like a fish, if its not healthy it wont be as prone to hunting (eating). After a large meal though, they do not seem to be as "sticky, " leading me to the thought that they control this mechanism some how.

Most of the time mine retracts almost all the way into the skeleton, but like Ryan said, they do funky things ;). When fed, mine stays almost all the way open for a few days, then once foods been well digested starts to close up more at night.

rduong89, FWIW I've noticed that they prefer smaller food items, like mysis, or my elegances' favorite, Rods Food. I believe its easier for them to digest, and has a varied nutritional basis for them to utilize. Now days if I offer mine a silver side, it will start to eat it, then "spit" it out.

heres my new babies...not very big, but love them just the same

Those have great coloration! But the one on the left has the short fat tentacles that would keep me from buying it in the store. Is it always like that, or this a recent thing? How long have you had them?

Updated pics of mine taken a few minutes ago...
Its in a 20H lit by a 175W 14k Hamilton. The tank is plumbed inline with 120 and houses a Purple LTA, (M.doreensis), the Yellow tailed damsel, and a White Bonnet Clown, (A. leukocranos). The anemone and the clown will be moved into a dedicated 58 gallon tank shortly.

The Elegence was purchased on 10-15-08

Its expanded more today than I've seen it so far.

Funny, I was just reading thru this thread some (again) and was able to put two and two together to get 4 and realise why there are so many snail shells stuffed under the flesh of my fully extended Elegance. it has to be grabbing them when they get close. thats some crazy stuff.

i just got them last night...ill get an updated pic when they get happier.

How they doing?

Nick

They ate like pigs last night, and are really nice and sticky.

I think i have them in way too much flow though.

Im going to do some rearranging tomorrow and get them in some lower flow.

How they doing?

what are the lighting requirements for elegance or parr values
are there different lighting needs between the indo and aussie

omg soo what can i do? it opens up once in awhile like when the halides are on. but like it doesnt open super big like the ones on here. At the LFS it open as big as it did in my tank.....Whats that film coming out of its mouth?

I'm not the expert here, but it looks like ones I've seen being burned by too much light. It appears like the ones not acclimated to the lighting they're under. Rad the Elegence coral theory thread for better information.
