Just curious if there are anyone that is keeping an elegance coral long term. If so, do you feed it? And how long have you had it. I saw a beauty in my LFS today. It was a nice Purple tipped one.

Yeah good friends with Curt. I know he has had his for a long time. I talked to him last night. He really didn't offer too much info on the care.
So I bought the elegance and have it on the lower part of my reef. Will see how it does.

lol..thats right but he's a good guy. Good keep me posted on how yours does. And I'll do the same. Is yours a Purple tipped or a Pink tipped one? You don't see many Purple tips or so I haven't in a long time. Mine is at least 10". Seems to like it in the SPS tank too.

I recently bought one that has been in captivity since '93. It's previous owner did nothing special and didn't feed it.
I think that they are pretty hardy corals if you get a healthy one. Unfortunatly that is a very big IF these days.
I have another that "died" at a lfs but re-grew one silver dollar sized polyp. It seems to be doing very well.
Good luck. Hopefully it won't get that swollen look which is usually a very bad omen.

Thanks for your reply. Yes I have heard the same thing about finding a healthy one. I made sure this ones tissue all around was intact and it appears to be very healthy. So hopefully it will do fine for me.
I'll keep fingers crossed it does not get that swollen look you mentioned. How long does this usually take to happen with these? Just so I'll know we passed the fear of it happening.

Here is the best compilation of info. Personally I think they typically die within just a few weeks after importation.
I would breath easier after about 3 months but it's only a gut feeling. I'm sure you can get more precise info from the link above.

Place it in the sand bed away from rock!

So you want to know my secret?
Buy a captive one,is your best bet.Mine was aquired before,they came in with the brown jelly infection we see today with them.Now what you might want to think about here,is possible a UV light,being it's a bacterial infection they seem to get.I just hook up my UV light a week ago.Just for other reasons,and not for the Elegance coral.But it does kill the bad bacteria in your system,and also lowers PO4 levels.But I see on the last posts here,as for not feeding it.That's not true ! You can feed it Silverfish,they like them a lot.As you can see they have a mouth just like any other LPS coral.As for as you don't have pesty fish in there,that will get a free meal.I wouldn't feed it,for a long while.Make sure it doing ok.Like one mentioned 3 months.Usually they will go after you get them in about 1 month.It's tissue will pull away,then the brown jelly will appear.As for the UV light goes,that's just a guess here.I'm not really sure one way or another on that.
But I also see here on this post.It was cut 3 times as for frags?That's what I would like to hear more about.There is a site that sells Elegance captive raised frags.But was wondering what you might have done for the mother colony to survive,and it's frags?

Oh,I have one correction there as for feeding.They are Sliverslides that you can use.
Z-nut,being you are totally barebottom you "might" have a problem without that sand bed?I have read a lot of posts about these,and where they are collected in the wild.Some are saying they need the higher nutrient system vs.low nutrients system you are running.I've even noticed mine since going BB both of them don't open as much as they used to.I know in a few more weeks,because the one is going into the new LPS deep sand bed.

The one I have has been in my tank for about 1.5 year. It grew well and looked healthy. Steve Pro wanted a peice of it for his new green house, so he and Eric Borneman took a tile saw to it and cut it into 3 peices. Steve has one, I have one in my home tank, and one in my big display.
I have a friend that has pics and vid, I will get him to post.

I feed mine but it appears that folks have success without feeding.
I had one about 20 years ago back when they were one of the few corals that actually did well and I fed it large chunks of shrimp.
My small one that regenerated from a seemingly dead wild colony really responds to a clam,mussle, shrimp,oyster puree. It closes up like a rhodactis when I target feed with this stuff.
Nothing else seems to stimulate such a feeding response.

WOW,that's pretty cool what you did there.I was always worried about cutting in between it's mouths.But it seems,being it with draws like that you won't see the mouths anyway.But after the frags were made,did you do any type of dip.Say on the line of Iodine,for infections?If I would have know this sooner,I could have plenty of frags going around.
Oh well,at least we know for sure,they can handle the cutting of them.I was always afraid,to cut into it.Because I didn't want to lose the whole colony.But thanks for the movie.If you could say if a dip was used at all here?

Nope. I did not do anything special to the frags after. No dip. Just placed them on eggcrate with decent flow for awhile after.
