Hiya

I know i spoke a few weeks back about probs with my Aussie Elegance..well things haven't improved :(

Ive tried everything with it ..putting on the rocks..putting on the sand..i even switched over my original 150 watt halide for 96 watt of T5!!!...ive tried no flow...medium flow..high flow but it just won't open..i can keep all other LPS no probs including Cynarias,Acan Lords,Trachys,bubbles,Blastos,Chalice...

So ive given myself an ultimatum....i either see if the elegance improves by the end of this week..or i pass it on to another reefer..

Thanks

Elliott

One thing i have noticed since day 1 is the fact that the coral had like white stringy stuff around each of its mouths,,like its spewing up its guts or summat like that

Any input would be much appreciated..i don't wanna give up this coral!!!

96watts of T5? Or do you mean PC? Trying to figure out how to get 96watts out of T5's.

Aside from the lighting (I missed your previous post, sorry :( ) What kind of flow is it getting? Are there any fish bothering it? I've had my (Indo) Elegance for over a year now, and recently removed the clownfish that were hanging out near it. What a difference. It looked healthy and not irritated before, but I was amazed at what the presence of those fish did. Now that they're gone, the thing is 3 times its normal size!

How about feeding? I feed mine mysis a few times a week, along with pellets too! (Not usually on purpose, but it will grab one if it floats too close). Apparently mine also has no problem eating snails...

Don't give up!

Hiya

There not PCs there proper high output T5s..4x24 watt bulbs..2 of em are blue actinic tubes and 2 are 14k

Only aggrevation it MAY be getting is from my fairy wrasse which has a terrible habit of spitting sand over my corals!!!

Flow wise its in medium indirect flow..from 2x Hydor Korallia Nanos and another 1000lph pump...

Let me know what you think and thanks for the encouragement :)

Hi

I import these corals from AU for almost a year now with excellent results. Have not lost a one. I have missed your other posts. From talking with the folk in the industry in AU, they emphasize the importance of feeding. They tell us almost all who lose them starve them to death. They consider these real meat eaters. What are you feeding and how often? Believe it our not, the sellers in AU feed chopped fish. I brought one back from the brink of death that a buyer was killing with poor care in his tank simply by taking it back, putting it in low flow, moderate light, and daily feeding until it was fat and happy again. Feel free to contact me.

Elliot,
All the elegances that have that white filaments over the body have eventually died.

Also I had a friend who lost his Aussie elegance and his was not from a lack of feeding though.
But feeding sounds like a good thing to do generally speaking.

Thanks Guys you've been really helpful :)

No i haven't been feeding it..the LFS i bought it from advised me against direct feeding as most marine frozen foods contain high levels of phosphate and apparently phosphate is really bad for Elegance...

But now you've mentioned it i will give it a try..i would hate to lose this coral

Thanks

Elliott

Wow, lol, yesterday must have been Monday since I couldn't figure out that wattage math!

I'm shocked a LFS would tell you NOT to feed your elegance! You can always rinse off some frozen mysis in fresh water before you feed if you're concerned about phosphates, but in all honestly, I wouldn't worry. You're not going to feed so much that it degrades your water quality.

I was feeding my bubble coral half a cube of frozen mysis, but, since it can apparently suck down an entire cardinalfish, I'll just stick with whole from now on!

My elegance (when it's not eating snails) gets mysis and sometimes marine pellets a few times a week. I just wiggle them in its tenticles and if it's hungry (which it always is) it grabs them.

I know you said your elegance isn't coming out, maybe try turning off the pumps/powerheads in your tank for a little while and let a bit of food near it. Maybe it will help encourage a feeding response. Just don't stuff anything into it incase it gets damaged.

Keep an eye on that wrasse. Sand could definately irritate it. Have you tried doing some sort of reef dip? When I first got mine I used that Seachem stuff, seems to work well for me. Coral was a bit...peeved, but it's still going strong! It's outgrowing my 20ga so fast I have no idea what I'm going to do!

Since people are suggesting feeding I will chime in and ask a question. Mine appear to like food. Everything from mysis to chopped shrimp and sea scallops.
Now for the question: Does feeding meat help with coloration or is it my imagination?

I just picked up an elegance today at my LFS (bright toxic green with purple tips and its HUGE 6-8"). My LFS told me that elegance are lagoon corals and actually like kinda dirty substatrate/sand so the do best in the dirtyist part of your tank because the are use to the low water flow and dirty water of a lagoon. I usually listen to this guy to because he's got a degree in marine biology and did extensive work in the keys. so maybe try that advice if it helps good luck.

Thats true of indo elegance, and is part of the reason they dont survive long in our aquariums. They are coming from water that is dirty and deeper, so they dont get much light. The indo elegance really need shaded to do well, even short term, generally.

The aussie elegance are coming from much shallower, cleaner water, and is part of why their survival rate has been so much higher.

Well got some news guys :)

The Cat looked no better so today i took it back to my LFS..i also presented them with the information from this thread about how important feeding is to these corals and basically told them they mis-advised me with regards how to keep it....

And thanks to you guys..there giving me a new elegance free of charge  ..

I pick up the new little aquacultured Aussie Elegance nextweek..can't wait to get it..this time i will feed it from day one

Thanks for all your help and advise

Elliott

MY LFS has a huge elegance in a display tank he has had for several years and he
told me he has never fed it. His opinion was that feeding it meaty food could cause problems
if the food rots inside the elegance. I would think it would spit it back out before that happens but that was his thinking and he kept his alive so I was not going to argue with him.
I used to feed my two indonesian elegances when I first got them but have not in the
past year and they seem just as healthy to me. They might have grown faster if I fed it though.
If feeding was the key factor in keeping elegances alive, I would think the mystery of keeping them alive would have been solved long ago.
But since your new elegance is a frag of an aquacultured Aussie, it stands a better chance of surviving, fed or not.

For what its worth, I have 4 aussie elegance corals in my display and have not fed any of them in more than a year. All 4 are getting bigger and look very healthy.

I have just had an amazing result...the original Elegance is coming back to life..the LFS told me to keep it and bin it..but i thought i would just stick it in my tank at the back and see what happened..i put it in really high flow and now its getting big again..im not celebrating yet but so far it looks like it will be ok..i won't be telling my LFS though :)

See what u think

Thanks

I haven't posted in this forum in a while, but there is some misleading info in this thread, so I'm posting.

All of the Elegance corals that show the white stringy stuff (mesenterial filaments) do not die. I have several that have lived through it. It is most likely a self defence response brought on by chemical war fare (aleopathy) from soft corals, or some other stress causing influence. This condition is much more likely to appear in corals that have been weakened by other influences first.

Elegance corals do not like dirty water. Elegance coral can be found in many different environments. Just because some of them survive in less than perfect environments, does not mean we should duplicate it in captivity. They deserve the same water quality we would provide for any delicate coral species.

I have had problems with Elegance corals prematurely discharging food that was laden with phosphate. Healthy Elegance corals in the right environment can survive without direct feeding. They do grow much faster and expand much fuller when fed, though.

In my opinion, the flow is to strong on the coral posted above. The flow is lifting the polyp away from the skeleton. The coral will be unable to expand under these conditions. There are rumors that this can cause polyp bail out. I have never left an Elegance under that much flow long enough to find out for myself, though. Other than that, the coral looks like it is recovering. Don't expect it to make huge strides in its rehab. It will take a very long time before it regains the long flowing tentacles you see in other Elegance corals. Good luck and I hope he's with you for many years to come.

Just feed the poor thing (daily if u can) and it will be OK. Strong flow isnt good 4 them ether, and it does look like 2 much on that pick. my tow are doing greate, also the first one was bleached and nearly dead when i got it a year ago. feeding twice a week did nothing, but daily feedings did the trick big time. Now i hardly have enough space 4 both in the tank.

That is what I have noticed over several years watching elegances that come in the various LFS. Sorry if the statement was misleading. I should have stated there is nothing 100% anything in this hobby but I took that as a given. Elegances with that white filaments all over the body are not in good condition, at least from what I've noticed, so it is indicative of poor health at the least. I'm sorry if my all or nothing statement is confusing.
You state that several have lived. Several out of how many you've seen with this condition?
