Elementary Classroom Tank

I'll check it out thanks. Our ac turns off after 4 hours, and years ago I had a fried tank one Monday. Not gonna risk it! :( I found one on Craigslist - hopefully it'll work.
You keep it at school during the summer??

Finally some pics...sorry it took me so long. :)

Very nice idea I am happy there are people out there willing to do things like this for kids ! keep up the good work!

If you would like a pistol shrimp I'd gladly donate mine. I've tried pairs with my A. randalli but I've lost all three of my shrimp gobies to my overflow and have given up on having the pairing. I've had my shrimp since august and its doing well but doesn't do more than stick its claws out now and then

Tank update...

Thought I should update everyone with the progress of the tank. It is doing quite well! We now have two black clown fish (thanks to IGGY!), a Lubbock's Fairy Wrasse, a tail spot Blenny, a yellow watchman Goby who has pair with a tiger pistol shrimp, a sand-sifting starfish and a handful of snails. We also have a handful of corals now, thanks to my dear hubby.

You kid - but one of their assignments (after learning about the various adaptions of fish) was to create/design their own fish, including a "scientific name"...I had one that not only created a latin name for his, but learned how to properly pronounce it! 0:)
Where in St. Pete are you, my husband is taking classes at USF a couple days a week, maybe I could get him to swing your way...?

Im on 9th ave and 49th st in st. pete can meet up around downtown if need be, i could have that 20 gallon stocked for you in no time :)

I am going to revive this thread, along with the tank. This is my wife's (dna4ya) tank and we built it together. However, the tank has been neglected a bit, due to some life changes. Time to get back on track.

This is her 20G long "nano" tank that is meant for her elementary classroom. We started out strong with this tank and have to relaxed on the husbandry lately. We have not lost any fish, however coral are another story. We only started with a few, but most of those are gone. Below are some pictures showcasing the current state of the tank. I plan on getting things looking more organized, adding a couple reactors, and cleaning up the algae. Here we go!

That whole setup looks great.
Any items you are in need of?
I would be happy to help...

Thanks so much. I have a post coming with the plans for the tank. If you could help with any of that, I know she would great appreciate it. She loves everyone willingness to help in this hobby.

Thanks to all.

Thanks for the replies. He's still working on getting it all back in shape...and I'm chomping at the bit to get it back fully stocked. (Although my fish are doing great.)
You are correct. The tank is currently in my kitchen :-/ I had to move it out when I went on maternity leave and hope to have it back in the classroom after winter break. I think my students were more upset about the tank leaving during my maternity leave than me leaving. 0:) (I have the same group of students year after year, so they get quite attached to them.)

I did more planning for the tank then anything else. I did however clean the glass, remove the salt creep, and organize the wires. I also adjusted the water level in the sump in hopes to improve the Tunze skimmer. However in doing so I have created a ton of micro bubbles. This sump is an aqueous model 1 from my old tank, and is just so small. The Tunze skimmer is also from my old tank and is to big. Lastly I placed and order of 6 Berghia Nudibranchs. They should have the Aiptasia problem handled in no time. See picture below for the minor improvements.

As “nathan1986” pointed out the tank is currently at home. This year has been a year of changes for her and me. We welcomed our 1st child to our lives in March of this year. It has been the best experience of our lives. However, we are learning and adjusting to being parents. So in order to make her back to school/work life easier, we kept the tank home this school year. My plan was grandiose. I thought that with the tank being at home, I could stock it to the rim. The reality of the matter is that I barely had time to do good husbandry on our home tank (and it is mostly automate). We are settling in, and our days are becoming more and more manageable—hence the reviving of the tank. I want the kids jaws to drop when they see this tank this year, and I want them to go home talking about it. I want them to have respect for marine life, and learn its importance. I will leave it to Andrea (dna4ya) to share some stories from last year.

So here is the plan. I want to make this an relatively easy tank to care for. I don't plan on placing any super sensitive coral in it (at least not yet). I am thinking of turning it into a colorful Zoanthid tank with a few LPS. I want to add a BRS dual reactor to the tank. I have a manifold already in place with two extra valves. I want it to be the BRS style because I have extra containers, and could fill them with carbon and GFO for her. This way she simply needs to twist it off and replace. Also I want to add a small refugium. I believe this could help control nutrients, as well as provided an important teaching opportunity. So because so many have asked to help (in the past and present) I will list the tanks needs. Please don’t take this as a ploy to get equipment or stock, simply responding to generous reefers.

Equipment:
5g aqueon tank (gonna call petco in the am, I believe it $1 per gallon month)
Refugium light
BRS dual reactor

Livestock:
Everything for a small refugium
Zoanthids or Palythoa
Maybe some LPS

Today I was able to pick up a few snails to mow down the algae. I also picked up a 5.5 gallon tank from Petco. This is for the refugium. I will order some bulkheads this weekend and begin the drilling next week. I want this to set just behind the sump and be gravity fed back into the return side of the sump. I will most likely put one baffle in so gunk doesn't get into the drain.

I didn't have much to do, or time to do it so how about a profile of the tank. Its a 20 gallon long with an internal overflow in a peninsula style. The sump is an Aqueon model 1 sump that is drilled to feed an external PanWorld pump. This pumps into a manifold the currently only feeds a JBJ chiller. There are two unused ports on the manifold. The setup uses Tunze 9016 skimmer. As for lighting, It is powered by a 24" DeepBlue SolarExtreme 4 bulb T5 fixture. It holds 4 Giesemann bulbs (1 Blue plus, 1 Actinic plus, 2 Pure Actinic). It has an JBJ auto top off with a 7 gallon reserve. It sits on a custom made stand with 4 casters making transport easier.

It inhabitants include tail-spot blenny, Scott's Fairy Wrasse, Black & White Ocellaris Clownfish, and a yellow watchmen goby bonded with a pistol shrimp. In regards to coral, currently it holds a small frag of Frogspawn and some mean green zoanthids. Below are a few photos.
