Wow, that's fast...thanks for doing this.

Well, I'm going to Staples Center tomorrow night to see RAIN. Woot.

So I'll drop by and pick it up. Thanks Gab. Mind giving me your address and # thru pm?

elos kh kit

elos kh kit

Picked up my kh kits this afternoon. Thanks Gabe for doing this!

Ran and repeated a few alk tests on my tank and mixed saltwater.

Pros: Nice quality materials, vials are of glass, and the syringes are the ones with the rubber gaskets, rather than cheap vinyl Salifert ones. Simple test to do..5 ml of water and drop the one reagant into the vial until you see a color change. Each drop you add corresponds to 1 degree of dkh. Color change is abrupt and easy to distinguish. Comes with a dated certificate from the NIST giving the production and expiration date ( don't know if it is worth anything but piece of mind).

Con: Only gives dkh readings in single units (i.e 8, 9 10, etc.). Not a big deal with me...I just want to know what ballpark I'm in.

I think I will stick with the Elos test kits for awhile, since I like the ease of use for the alk test. Maybe someone can chime in with a report on the other test kits.

not a problem Gordon...

i am getting totally different results...

Salifert test kits are giving me

Ca 375
Mg 1320
Alk 7.9
Elos kits are giving me

Ca 500
Mg 1200
Alk 10

Gordon is going to come over with his new Salifert test kits... something is def different here...

When are you guys getting together, maybe I can
join you with my Tetra and Tropic Marin Alk test kits
and old Salifert Ca and Mg test kits. lmk Dennis

Dennis.. Gordon just cam over and test my tank...

we got..

Ca 390
Alk 10
Mg 13350

Dennis you are welcome to come over and test your kits with mine... ( Salifert and Elos)

Yeah, this is getting very frustrating..

I have two salifert alk kits that give me different readings. The new elos alk kit agrees with my newer Salifert alk kit (though my other kit is relatively new also). I am assuming (maybe wrongly) that the elos and my newer salifert kit are correct.

What concerns us is that the elos ca and mg kits do not agree with two different salifert kits respectively. Both Gabe's and my salifert mg and ca kits give similar readings of his water.

Group buy for LaMotte kits, Gabe???:D

What I will try to do is get a sample of UCSB NSW and use that as a rough standard to test our kits.

Glad to see you guys using our kits. As with any new testing equipment it takes a bit to get used to a new system. So here are a few tips of things that others, including myself, have noticed when we started using elos test kits.
On all titrimetric test kits, not just ours, you can get more resolution by simply adding more test water and reagents. Example: For our kh if you want each drop to be 0.5 dkh per drop simply add 10ml of test water instead of 5ml of test water. If you want even more precision, add 15ml of water and each drop becomes, 0.25 dkh. Like Glaudds points out this is usually not needed and of course you will go through test kits a lot quicker but every once in a while, or when you are close to a upper/lower limit for a given parameter it is useful.
Make sure to shake the reagents very well before you start the test.

Hold the reagent bottle close to vertical or vertical when dropping into vial. This is important because each dropper is a lab dropper that will not work properly if you hold the dropper close to horizontal (cuts the drops short).

On th Mg and Ca test make sure the solution is BLUE and not just mostly blue and stays blue at least 30 seconds after the last drop of reagent. I recently noticed this when I was blind testing some seawater and was coming up with low Mg and it was because I was just getting it to mostly blue and not waiting the instructed 30 seconds for the solution to stay blue.

Hope that helps and thanks Bebo for offering this to your club and let me know if you guys have any other questions.
