How are the new lights working out - especially compared to your Tek fixture? Do you have any idea what PAR you might be getting, top and bottom?

great set-up man, you rearrange your rock work more than my ex moved around the furniture! ;)

Kidding of course, youve actually inspired me to reaquascape my 40. I did it kind of quickly during my down size and ive been unhappy with it, so thanks!

Im also curious to know how you are liking that light so far. Im a hardcore metal halide guy but am toying with the idea of LEDs on a 40 gallon "cubish" in the near future.

How was the transition fron T5 to LED? the corals seem as happy as ever but did you use a PAR meter or anything to avoid shocking the corals?

Once again, awesome tank and killer pics. Keep up the good work!

Absolutely beautiful tank! I'm in the process of setting up a 40b (20h sump), and your tank will be part of the template for mine.

I have a few questions on equipment though... I'm staring right now at the Octopus NWB110 and Tek fixture I received for Christmas. I'm wondering:
- how well suited the skimmer is for that size tank?
- when you had your Tek fixture, did you feel you could use more light? I have a 6 bulb Tek Elite, and I'm concerned it'll be far too much light for the corals I'll be keeping (mostly zoas and lps, some easy sps); I'll be using ATI bulbs
-I may have missed it, but what are you using for a return? I'm torn between a mag 5 and Eheim 1260
-I noticed you stopped dosing calcium, so you're not dosing anything whatsoever correct? is your Ca level steady, and at what is it?

thanks for the inspiration!

Just got a few nice pieces recently
Im thinking of compiling a photobook of all the tanks ive shot!

kinda a dumb question but where did you get those fans over your tank, ive been looking for something like that for a while now.

amazing pics btw

Im not sure if someone asked this already but what kind of light do you on your tank i know it LED's but specifically what kind brand, DIY, etc.....

fantastic pictures! truly captivating! The close ups of the coral are reminds me of what fascinates me so much about saltwater life, it looks so alien...

Dude, I am totally amazed at your close-up shots, I went through about 5 pages of your thread but I couldnt find out, WHAT kind of lens are you using on your camera????

Is that a macro lens that lets you get that close? and are you taking pics through the glass or a look-down box?

Thanks in advance, amazing colors that you have, the lighting really makes them POP!

Stunning tank!

The progress is amazing and rockwork is beautiful!

Did you use epoxy or rods?

Also...I saw you had a TEK unit before. Do the LED's bring out that much more color from the coral? Is it worth the upgrade?

tahnks for the compliments
the lens im using is a tamron 180mm 2.5 macro on kenko extensin tubes
i only shoot through glass
since i have a shallow tank and i placed my corals mid range between the glass i can get really macro

cheddar no rods or epoxy just large rock pieces sitting on each other
also leds are more intense with shimmer but not as a full coverage as the 36in t5's
color wise more pop on greens and yellows but not as much on the reds and purples

mnoey wise it might be worth it for leds but if your getting good results then keep the t5s
im getting great growth from sps though
ive never tried to keep them before so i cant say if its cause of the new water/salt/lights etc or all the above

wow man don't be harsh on yourself, those are some stunning pictures, great job and nice looking tank too, love the non cluttered rock work and layout

Inspired... How are things with your tank?

Elsefailed,

I was looking at 40 breeder videos on youtube when I stumbled across one of yours. One of the comments mentioned this thread.

I have been tankless for over a year, and couldn't hold out any longer. What started out as thoughts of a ten gallon nano, migrated to a 20 long, and then a 40 breeder.

I had this half wall in the middle of my apartment dividing the real estate, and I envisioned building that out to accommodate the 40 Breeder. There was only one problem... the half wall is L shaped. I cant in good conscience put a tank on one end but not the other. It wouldn't be right, would it? I mean it is after all the center of my living space.

Anyway, the half wall was more work to retrofit than it was worth. It ended up coming out, and a custom, L-shaped, dual 40 breeder stand now divides the the living room, kitchen, and office space (I believe you have my stapler...).

How the heck I went from a dusty 10 Gallon tank to this I don't know. I didn't even drink my lunch! (well maybe a little)...

But anyway, its been a work in progress over the past couple of months, and every time I want to remember why I did this to myself, I think of josh (my drinking buddy) who was here (and somewhat responsible) at the time of inception. I then blame petco for selling 40 gallon breeders at $1 a gallon. I mean what is a reefer supposed to do with two for the price of one?? less than the price of one actually... Don't give me that self control crap!

The plumbing is finally underway, at least the dry fitting stage... My tiny apartment is sick of table and chop saws, sanders, and nail guns. The cement floors didn't appreciate the ramset either.

Every time I think I'm crazy, which I am (don't tell anyone), I come to terms with it by looking at your amazingly well setup tank. You're setup has inspired me, so first off thank you.

Secondly, this threads been cold for over a year, hows your tank? Has it evolved into a 225 or something? I would love to know, if you have the time and ambition to share...

Thank you again for your awesome photos, and the inspiring tank.

Awesome Job!

Tom
