Email..I'm exhausted

Ok...I have NEVER had issues with email setup on both the AC3 and with the Apex on my other home network. I moved earlier this month, though not far, and switched internet service providers from Comcast to Qwest DSL. I am currently using a modem that was "exclusively" for ATT...yeah right. I have been trying to get this email to work for the past two weeks and no matter what I do, I cannot get the thing to work. Here's my setup.

I have an Apple Airport Extreme as my router, and port forwarding is setup so I can connect to the controller externally. Attached to my controller I have the Airport Express so I don't have to run a long ugly cord to the base station. The Express is paired to the Apple Airport extreme router.

Here are my settings:

Email is enabled.
SMTP server is: mail.gmx.com (because I use gmx to forward to my gmail)
SMTP Port: Originally I had this at 25, then changed to 587 just like the manual
Username/password verified a BILLION times
Authentication is enabled

With the airport extreme, in addition to the port forwarding for the aqua controller itself, I have it to forward the SMTP server using port 587 to my aqua controller which is at 10.0.1.201. I'm unsure if maybe there could have been an issue with the airport express (the "bridge" that the apex is connected to) which is at 10.0.1.2, so I thought maybe open the port to that IP address...I've tried anything and still NOTHIGN.

I tried doing one of the email tests using Telnet like the unofficial manual said and it gave me a message saying "smtp: mail.gmx.com unkn host"

...aside from the email...the other problem I have been getting is Qwests constantly changing the IP address...but I *think* I have that resolved now as the modem wasn't set up to be "always on"...we'll see. Regardless, this email is driving me nuts and I am very knowledgeable on computer networking.

My SMTP Server setting for GMX is smtp.gmx.com. My port is 25.

I just tried your settings and mail.gmx.com works also. I think it may be your port number.

Do NOT port forward the SMTP port.

You have a DNS issue. The Apex DNS setting should be the router's inside address. That probably is 10.0.1.1.

sounds DNS-ish" to me ....
does your isp furnish you with one of those lame-arse email accounts?
that what I used in lieu of GMX

anyway, not that I think you didn't already do so, but re-check your outgoing mail server again, also can you explain why you can't just use port 25?

You are absolutely right...I'm sure of it. When I received the qwest modem/router, it was setting itself as the primary DHCP server which I utterly refused. So it changed my apple network using the 10.xx.xx.xx to the 192.xx.xx.x. I had it that way temporarily so I had to adjust my network parameters...adn then forgot to change the dns. Will see if that works. Thanks.

PS. I got rid of that ugly wireless router/modem from qwest so I could continue letting my Apple control the network.
