What does everyone think of them? I have a small amount of random bubble algea and they are the only things that I know of eating it. Are they reef safe? I have heard conflicting reports.
I think you will continue to hear conflicting reports.
Some people have had great luck with them not harming anything but algae while others report them as not being reef-safe at all. I think it a "luck of the draw" type thing.
For what it's worth, it seems that the crabs that eat things they shouldn't are larger animals.
I have 2 emerald crabs. One eats algae and is wonderful, the other kills hermit crabs and I've seen him pinching off zoos...if I could catch that thing I'd feed him to a mantis or something...I HATE HIM! I agree with capo, it's luck of the draw.

I have found that its the type Mithrax crab is the the problem. The most safe and least aggressive is the emerald green ones, the others stay away from, don't not listen to a LFS that says they are the same crab, they are from the same family.
