Emergency kit

Im wondering what things should be included in an emergency kit in case something needs to be addressed ASAP. Other than good test kits, salt, and ro/di water. I want to put something together just in case.

hospital/quarintine tank? and enough mixed, heated and almost exact parameters as your main tank to do at least a 10% water change. Hospital/quarintine, should also be exact parameters as the main display tank. Good luck!!!

One of the biggest emergency situations that I encounter is power outages (granted I live in hurricane country, but it should be of some concern for everyone). Its good to have a back-up plan in case of an extended period without power. Depending on your budget a couple of battery operated air pumps, a decent power inverter to run from your car battery, or an electrical generator are options that all work well. My power inverter has saved my livestock on several occasions, and it only cost $50

If you are paranoid about tank leaks/failures a couple of large rubbermaid containers are good to have on hand (can pull dbl duty as quarantines too), as are LOTS of towels, perhaps even a wet/dry vac.

Backup equipment in case of failure is nice to have as well, although this can be fairly expensive. I keep a few old bulbs around.. just in case one breaks ect, I also have a spare ballast in case of failure, and a mag-drive I can drop in as a back up quickly if for some reason my external pump dies on me.

Wally-World has the battery op. air pumps in the fishing dept. theyre about $5.99 and require 2X"D" batteries. they should be close to the minnow buckets. thats where i found mine. :)

thanks so far for the input. I think this will help all newbies like myself, to prepare for that unavoidable first "emergency".

Polypad and polyfilter, for if your nephew dumps his toy truck in your tank.

Extra hose,
a siphon,
enough clean buckets;
a square of plastic needlework canvas [you'll find uses],
some ladies kneehighs [cheap bags for carbon],
carbon! removes ammonia;
white vinegar---a cleaner that won't pollute your tank; use it to clean pumps and equipment.
A bottle of Amquel for dire emergencies.
ALWAYS have enough salt for your whole tank and buckets enough: if you ever have a tank emergency on Christmas Eve, it is a very lonely feeling to have no salt. A ro/di unit makes you independent of Walmart.
gloves: you don't know what you'll have to handle.
razor blades, the one-sided sort: good for lots of purposes.
rubber bands: can attach things without pollution.
gutter guard, the plastic sort: can block a jump area
spare thermometer: they can lie
a log book: writing down your test results means you can never kid yourself about the trend your tank is showing.
