Emergency Power and a plan

I just read an article in SPS Keepers about a power outage due to the snow storm. Total lost of corals due to freezing. The guy estimate his lost at $10,000. Some of us have a huge investiment in this hobby.

2 years and no major power lost for us.

Hurricane season is drawing near. How on earth can we protect our systems with the current price of gas? Suggests?

I use the battery backup with my vortech for the main display, and a backup air pump that only turns on when the power goes out for my fuge. That will get me through the storm and any power outage less then a day and a half. After that it's generator time!!!

a generator is the only sure way, you could also get long term power for your tank if you use a bank of deep cycle batteries and an inverter.

In a big disaster :D the first thing to shut down is..........natural gas :D, so the generator goes about a week on your 250 or 500 gallon tank ...and then, the fuel delivery :D cant make it hehehehe lets hope for the best.I have a battery bank and a custom made system that will take me throe 30 days ... after that.............

Steve- the generator with 500 gallons runs my place for 11 days.
At day 3 s/p big storm there was gas available for refill.
Amerigas provides contratcs to avoid such a problem.
If at 11 days u can't get either gas or fpl then so be it IMO.

What would be the best way for outtages in a condo if you live on the 32nd floor? I believe my building has a emergency backup system, but not sure how fast or how long it may last... and we are not allowed to be in the building during the hurricane and until the building is labeled safe. Meaning I would have to setup the "back-up" filtration / lighting before the power even goes out....

suggestions would be greatly appreciated on this one..

a couple of deep cycle batteries and an inverter would work great in your condo. the only problem with the battery system is that it wont flip over automatically if the power goes off while your not home, but it looks like that wouldnt be a problem for you. its not a cheap system to set up, but what is in this hobby?

Is that 11 days on a whole house generator?

read the fine print gasman, :D you can have an ATS (Automatic Transfer Switch) for deep cycle batteries, I currently have a low voltage ATS in mine :D. 11 dayses beckup, is plenty, By the way I have an 80 KW 208 volts, used for 1 day, in a job that the customer said "I want a 125" nice to be rich :D anyway the 80 KW is a generack with 1 year factory waranty available for $ 10k without tank and ATS. For a big house that requires a 400 amps service is perfect. You will probably save 15 k and the think is BRAND NEW.

Yup.

I can go almost 2 weeks on mine if I only use the A/C at night.
