Enlarging holes in a pre-drilled tank

glass hole saw with a simple guide (plywood with a hole drilled in it or whatever) clamped down to keep it centered or a drill guide that holds the hole saw in place.. small trickle of water to keep it cool.. done..

and yes never used teflon tape on PVC..
but thread sealant specifically intended must say PVC on package) for PVC is great/recommended.

I've been using 'cheap' ABS bulkheads for over two decades; haven't cracked one yet (though I did snap one off once). Sch80 bulkheads are unnecessary IMO. Using solvent welded slip versions avoids user error .

I agree 100%. The only reason why an ABS bulkhead would ever crack is if they are over tightened. Like you, I've been using ABS bulkheads for decades too. I've got at least 4 bulkheads on my current tank that are 20 years old and still perfect and have never leaked. I rarely ever use SCH80 bulkheads on any of my installs as the ABS ones are perfectly fine and never an issue if installed properly.

Like others, I don't use Teflon tape on threaded fittings. Oatey Great White Pipe Dope with PTFE is all I use now and I've never had a leak or a cracked fitting. PVC fitting manufacturers such as Lasco don't recommend Teflon tape on threaded fittings as the Teflon stretches the PVC fitting which can lead to cracking.

I'm not saying ABS fittings are bad, I'm saying the ABS bulkheads that came with the drain kit for my tank are trash, junk, without teflon I can bottom out the connection, meaning it will screw all the way to the hex with no effort, Teflon was needed in this instance, as we all say we live and learn, I learned my lesson, I know there are great products out there, but in the crunch of water running from bottom of tank we all have to take measures, seeing as we have no outlet for bulkheads where I live, I had to order new ones and have them over night shippped, seeing as I ordered the wrong product I made due, now that I have 1 installed, I like it, more work on me you might be right, better for me in the long run you bet in my opinion. Everything I read about connections stated 10 to 12 wraps of Teflon for fittings, I did buy some thread sealant but again bought the wrong product for lack of reading on my part, our area hardware stores cater more toward oilfield products rather than pvc, I have to make a treck to another city for more selection, I do the best with what I have or can order. As with anything we choose a path and take it, is it the right one?

This right here is why they cracked.

The connection without teflon bottomed out, screwed up to the hex by hand, Teflon was needed, these bulkheads are trash, they suck, bad casting, call it what you will, almost like screwing a sae into metric

Before we go any further, I'm not calling ABS bulkheads "cheap""junk" and shouldn't be used, what I'm trying to say is the ABS bulkheads that came with the drain kit I purchased from the manufacturer are trash, I should have replaced them when tank was first put up but I didn't, learning curve on my part, lesson learned..when the connections are screwed into bottom of bulkheads, they will bottom out, even brand new fresh out of the box, I researched and found more Posts on wrapping with 10 to 12 rounds of teflon, so that's what I did, and still would run up to the hex, now I am dealing with salt creep, and drips, the sch 80 bulked head is solid, tight befitting threads on. My connections, so that's the right tool for the job, again I am conveying the bulkheads I received with my tank suck, no other way to put it, no taper to the threads, straight bore, connections run up all the way, bottom out without tools, hands only So, now I have sch 80 installed, I like them, I want to use the, I will know better next time to buy after market bulkheads after seeing this first hand. In shape form or fashion am I trying to say ABS won't work. I'm saying mine are better served in the trash, seeing as I already bought them I will use them, and will install them when I remove the sump/ fug during my regular cleaning maintenance schedule.

Probably a stupid question but when you mentioned that you could tighten all the way to the hex, are you referring to the nut that holds the bulkhead to the tank? If so that "outside" thread is straight and not meant to have a fitting on it. I mean no disrespect by asking this, just making sure we are all talking about the same thing.

Referring to the hex on thread by Barb, also would do the same with pvc connections when I was going to install unions on all 3 drains, but seeing as the inside threads on bulkheads seem to be over sized I opted for hose connections to keep weight off connections,
No offense taken read alot of posts staring not to attempt this.
My sump manufacturer prefers connectingredients to sump with hose so that's the way I ran drain, the build is in large tanks
