Enough is enough..getting a 5D

Ok I am looking at less than 4 weeks till I get this bad boy but I have a few questions..

Will my current 100mm canon fit this body?

Also another concern I have is that it does 3 fps? I really want to use this for action shots as well...

Am I missing something?

The 5D can use any EF lens that Canon makes. It can't use cheaper EF-S lenses.

That is the correct burst speed, it's really not a sports camera. The buffer, however is large enough that if you set it to large JPG it'll pretty much take pictures continuously until the card fills.

Sweet! Cant wait to see what you can do with that bad boy...

ive always been really impressed with what youve done with your XT...

Right now the 5D is my dream camera. I honestly do not know what the next version could offer in terms of features to make me want to pay a 4-digit premium. Live view for macro work would be sweet though...

14 bit color and DIGIC III, (like the MkIII) would be nice but that's about it for me. The way that it's priced right now it's a heck of a bargain.

The 5D takes amazing photos, I tryed holding out until the next upgrade, but that upgrade seems like it'll never come. So I bought mine in May I think. When the new one comes out, I'll bet mine still takes great photos. I like Doug would be most interested in the Digi III and14 bit, and if it worked a sensor cleaner. I don't care about pixels, if its more, they'll just crowd more pixels into the same size sensor.

Yes for sports photography the 40d is a better choice with over twice as fast a frame rate and the crop body giving you a little extra on the zoom. The 5D is more geared toward landscapes and low light photography. I use the 5D for some sports and it does great but the faster frame would give me more chances of catching the perfect shot.

So if the majority of your shooting is sports related then 40D, however if it's low light or wide angle landscapes then the 5D would be a better choice.

Here's a 5D shot

Well it's not the majority of the shooting as I would like to expand what I take photos of.

I am thinking that if I am to upgrade I might as well get the full frame sensor and be done with it.

Would I be better off to just get new lens for my XT if I am not going to go with the 5D?

You can take sport shots just as well with the 5D, it'll just do it at 3 fps. Do you think you going to miss that magic shot because it was too slow? If so, yeah, get 40D. As far as getting a new lens and keeping the XT, that's always an option. What lens are you thinking about?

The 5D full frame sensor will show weaknesses in lenses that don't show up with the crop bodies. So I'd recommend getting good glass before the 5D. The 24-70 is a killer walk around lens for the 5D but cost more than the 40D body.

Are you sure about upgrading to a 5D? Your talking about a killer camera but it seems you haven't done enough research to even tell why you would want it in the first place.

Yea your right on with that comment, but I was considering upgrading to a 40D for the added features and then I find out I can get a KILLER deal on a 5D with a connection I have. So I thought even though i dont really know that much about it, I know its an awesome camera and it would be all I ever need so why not snatch it up for the low down! LOL!

:)

Cough! buy a NIKON Cough!

Nah, get the 40D, ive used them before, great camera, and very nice for reef photography too.

The real time histogram with pretty sweet too.

It depends on what you want to use it for of course, but I have a 5D (upgraded from 30D) and I bought my girlfriend a 40D (upgrade from an XT) and for taking whole tank shots, fireworks pictures, and landscapes the 40D is left wanting. The crop sensor can be very frustrating once you held a 5D. On the other hand, for wildlife I am never close enough. My girlfriend can get really nice shots with her 40D and her 100-400. I have to put TC's on my 400 f/5.6 and I'm still shorter than her. For action shots the speed in not important to me. I do not like going home and having to post process 800 pictures. But I took pictures of a deer fight once with the 30D and the speed was nice. I dunno if I find that truly important, I'm not a sports journalist. I guess it boils down to this, I LOVE MY 5D. I like it more than my GF's 40D.

You could keep the XT, using it for sports, and buy the 5D. No one ever said that you need to limit yourself to one camera body (except maybe your wife).

:)

Like Mike, I went from a 30D to a 5D last year. I absolutely love that thing. I can't even imaging going back. What really sets it apart isn't the pixel count, but rather it's pixel size; mainly because of the full frame sensor. It sports the largest pixel size in Canon's line which gives it excellent diffraction characteristics.

Diffraction is distortion that appears at higher f-stops. Since that's where landscape shooters often find themselves it's really hard to beat in the genre.

Great info everyone. I will have to weigh my options...

Dang it Doug now I am thinking 40D plus the 5D.. :D

My wife is telling me to think on!! LOL!

Hey if your getting a special one time deal on a 5D, by all means scoop it up! If your going to drop $2000+ on a camera but don't even know why you want it, keep your current DSLR and go on a Tunze-spree! (or some high quality glass, that was a nice suggestion) Whatever you decide, read read read read before you buy because thats just way too much money to guess blind with.
