Epoxy Putty - J-B Weld STICK

Hello,

I picked up some epoxy at the store today. I want to know if this is safe to use for the reef. I will be aquascaping with dry rock and it will be curing dry. I could not find a single item other than this one, which looked safe to use.

They make a product specifically for use with water called JB WaterWeld. I'm not sure it's any different than the one you bought, though.

A lot of people say they use it, but I personally would not use anything that does say it is reef safe. It does say drinking water safe, but do you want to take the chance?

There are many products that can be used which are reef-safe, which are not-stated as reef safe - such as super glue. Drinking water safe seems like reef-safe to me - although I'd like to get more input. Typically reef-safe products sold at LFS are just more expensive

As for waterweld - it is my understanding it is the same thing - except its made to be cured in the water - not in air.

I agree with you Chatyak. I've used many kinds of epoxy, and as long as it say safe for drinking water, IMO, means it's good for the reef. I must say though never used J-B.

I used JB Waterweld to hold my rocks together no problems at all, if you do a search you will find that many of us have used it with no ill affects.

Yes I did search prior, however could not find anything regarding jb stik, but from what I read its the same, minus the curing IN water part. The website said this:

"It's water-proof; petroleum-, chemical-, and acid-resistent; resists shock, vibration, and extreme temperature fluctuations, and withstands temperatures up to 500° F. J-B STIK is super strong, non-toxic, and safe to use. For wet-surface or submerged water or gasoline repairs, see our J-B Stik or Waterweld product information"

If it's fine for potable water, it should be fine for an aquarium.

Is this safe to use for attaching frags? I have read numerous threads online about people using jb water weld, however this is J-B STIK weld.... not sure what the difference is... either way I used it on my dry rock aquascape with foam and it's fine.... just wondering if I can use it for securing new corals.

I think it'd be fine, but starting with a few small frags at first might be a good cautious step.

I use waterweld, I personally would not use that one

that one will not cure underwater. I use JB waterweld, that stuff works very well at holding frags This stick might be useful for first attaching dry rock to each other before filling with water.
