Epoxy Putty

I bought some epoxy putty (oatey brand) from Lowes last week to help with a drain leak, but as I start aquascaping I was wondering if this is safe to use inside the tank to help hold rock formations together?

Looks just like the the "HoldFast" from MarineLand, except for the price tag

I have wondered the same thing myself. I researched it a little one time and came to the conclusion that the parent company that makes the sticks makes several different formulations, and I wasn't sure if the stuff in the plumbing section at lowes was a bad type or not, so I decided not to risk it. I have used marine epoxy from over in the glue secton, but like the two little fishies brand stuff the best for the consistency and how it sticks. Lately I have been doing all of my smaller rockwork stuff and frag plug gluing with duro superglue gel.

Go to Home Depot and pick up AquaMend Epoxy. I think its $3-$4? I havent bought any in awhile but need some so I'm sure I'll be gettin some this week. I have been usin that awhile and others in the club too. Its in the glue section in a bluish/green tube.

I wont be makin' the meeting. Sat. meetings aren't good for me. I usually work til 3:00-4:00. We can make arrangements to get the bucket back. I'm in no hurry for right now as I don't see us movin' my brothers tank for 2-3 months. But I don't want it to be cluttering your house so I'll try and get it soon.

Just be careful with your skimmer after using aquamend. It will make it go skimming crazy and could definitely overflow. Depending on how you have the skimmer set-up, that could be more or less disastrous.

Also, aquamend works good, but the problem seems to be in getting it to stick to the rock hard enough/long enough to set-up. For big things, I usually use a superglue/aquamend combo. Superglue on the rock surfaces for fast holding and bonding the aquamend to the rocks better, then aquamend in between for a nice more stable hold.

Thanks Brain, I'll try that as I'm attempting to use Tonga Rock for an open bottom and then large flatter rock on top of that.

And thanks for the tip on the skimmer as right now it's not doing much, very light watery skimmate,(and not much of that) so I will sure watch it closer. This might even get me a chance to fine tune the skimmer. (ASM-G2) Still playing and learning how far up the bubbles work best.

I have used the plumber epoxy wtih no bad effects, HOWEVER, it gets crumbly too easy and is a pain, so I only now use the marine epoxy also in the paint area section of lowes/home depot. It is a much better consistency. I have also had to use glue to set it faster as well...
