epoxy question

I know I will be needing some epoxy to attach sps that I have spoken for down in Columbus, but I have never used it before. I know there are some reef specific brand(s) that most seem to like.

What brand am I looking for and does anyone know if a vendor will have any?
or does anyone going to the swap have a spare tube they would not mind parting with.

I have gone the super glue route and never really got it to stick to much (other than my hands lol)

HD and Lowes both sell epoxy in the plumbing section. Make sure you get the stuff that says "for pottable water" and it will be the same stuff you get for aquariums, just packaged differently and 3x the cost.

I think it is called Plumbers putty and it comes in a tube just like the expensive aquastick stuff. It says for underwater application right on it... White label with a blue cap and clear tube. HD is a definate place to find it, not sure about Lowes. I just bought two tubes myself cost about $3.50 apiece, and it even says for aquariums on it. Great stuff...

Thanks a bunch Craig. I have a Lowes 10 min from my house so I will give them a quick try first before the 35 min jog to HD

I will not bother calling though, last time I was on the phone with Lowes I was told they don't sell 2X4's. I am guessing the young man forgot to look down the last row of wood

sad, I am sure he was not one of my students

Señor Briney,
The stuff you are looking for is called Aquamend. I know they sell it at Home Depot and I will be there today. I can pick up a stick of it for you and will be at the swap Saturday. Plumber's putty is the soft, non-hardening stuff you use to seal sinks and plumbing fixtures in place and not the epoxy. If you decide to go to Lowes and look for it they might not have Aquamend brand but you are looking for a 2-part epoxy stick.
When you use it you will also need super glue gel. You mix up a little ball of epoxy by squishing between your fingers until it is a uniform color. Then you can stick your frag into it to make a depression. Then remove the frag and add a couple drops of gel. Replace the frag and put a couple drops of gel on the bottom of the ball of epoxy. Then you can stick it to the rock wherever you want and it will stay. The reason for using the epoxy is that it forms to the little crevices and holds its shape while the super glue makes the actual bond.
The stuff is very much like Play-doh. It is a 2-part epoxy where the hardener is the center. One other tip is to use a razor blade to cut off the right-sized chunk of epoxy instead of tearing it since you may smash the 2 parts together and then your epoxy stick has a crusty end next time you need it.

Maybe the guy you spoke with was referring to the fact that the lumber is not 2" by 4" anymore... YEAHHHH that's what he meant... Sure. Let's just pretend that they are not that lazy/dumb :D

Thanks Kevin, I did not know about the super glue .
I will check out Lowes first and will be in Sandusky on Friday evening to treat my son to the new cartoon flick coming out. (Sandusky is home to both places but a much longer drive) so either way I should be good
I will drop you a quick note Saturday morning if both places were strike outs. Much like the Indians

Go Tigers
sorry, I could not help that

Kevin... the stuff I just bought from HD was not called Aquamend. Maybe they sell different versions at different stores... or how long ago did you buy it. I bought some on Monday.

It in fact was called plumbers epoxy putty "for underwater application". It is not the normal plumbers putty for plugging things, I believe it is the "brand". It is definately a two part epoxy stick as it says right on the package "2 part epoxy" and for potable water use and aquariums. Like I said above it is in the exact shape, size, style of tube as the AquaStick sold by Premium Aquatics and Salty Critter it is even the exact same colors.

It looks very similar to the Aquamend stick but a longer tube... and different packaging... just don't want Briney walking in the store asking for aquamend if that HD doesn't sell it... the razor blade is a good tip for cutting it off.

No problem, I did pick up 2 tubes of aquamend at Home Depot in Olmsted Falls today. There are about 10 different brands of epoxy sticks there but this one is the one mentioned on RC most so I stuck with it. If you need one just let me know and I will bring it along Saturday.

Ok what about this one?
Lowes had five minute epoxy putty (marine grade) it did not say safe for pottable water so I have not put it in my tank yet,

the brand is loctite five minute putty, it does set underwater and there is a pumbing pipe picture (of a drain)

I have a stick of reef epoxy from an outfit called "two little fishes." I read the directions and it says the product will cause the skimmer to overproduce. My skimmer is so tempermental, I'm afraid to use it. Has this been anyone elses experience?

Steve,

It will for a short period of time. Many additives/foreign substances will. Cyclopeeze causes mine to go bonkers. Its not a permanent thing. Last time I used some I left my skimmer off for 90 minutes and it fired up fine.

anyone have an Idea about that loctite epoxy ??

It may cause an outbreak of bryopsis but other than that it will be fine ;) :eek2:   JUST KIDDING!

I have no personal experience with that brand but I would assume it would be OK. Although I tend to worry less about adding things to my tanks but some people are very worried about every aspect of reefing.

I still have the other stick of Aquamend and it was only $2.97 plus tax so you could have both brans if you want. I will use it eventually and don't mind if you don't want it but I thought I would offer.

the bryso crack cuts right to the bone. LOL
I can only laugh right now about that stuff
My skimmer was loaded with dead spores from it (I peaked under the scope) so maybe the boosting pH might be helping

Bring the tube, if I find the right stuff tonight I will still buy the tube if you want.

I am just too nervous about a brand others have not really used or know that well. IF it said pottable I would but it does not say either way so I will be just using it to stick my fingers together on somthing else

I will be in my Blue Lions hat and have some students and my six year old son lagging behind with a real board look on his face.
