Equipment for a 300 gal??

Just bought a 300 gallon aquarium and will be starting the build soon. I need to know what a good sized return pump and what an effective and affordable skimmer would be to use... Two medium skimmers or one big one? And any affordable suggestions on pump(s)

Do a search on ebay for bubble magus 220a. I just picked one up for $269 a few weeks ago, and it's a beast for less than 1/2 the cost of anything comparable.

As for pumps, it depends on whether you want internal or external, and how quiet. For external, look at the sequence Reeflo pumps. I've gone back to internal and went with the Water Blaster 7000, which I use to feed a pair of media filters, the fuge and the tank quite well.

For a skimmer I would go with something that has an swc askoll or a bubble blaster 5000.

SRO-5000
XP-5000
SWC 300a

Can't comment on the BM.

For a return pump consider a reeflo snapper.

Did a lot of looking around today and I think for the price and qualitly I'll probably go with a bubble magnus cone skimmer and a pan world external pump.

That was my thought on the skimmer pumps as well, and the direction I was going, but they were all in the $500-$700 range. I had never heard of Atman pumps, but I figured I could always pick up a BB down the road if I didn't like the Atman that the Bubble Magus comes with. So far, pleasantly surprised.

I'll wouldn't skim on the skimmer, buy something that's worth to keep until you upgrade bigger or breakdown the tank. How many people here bought a skimmer and ended up buying something else? At least I did, a couple times.

I currently have the octo sro 5000, this thing skim the daylight out of my heavily loaded 125, and couldn't be happier, should've just got it at the first place.

Exact models that I've narrowed it down to are the Bubble Magus 220A skimmer(rated 260-396 gal) and the Pan World 200PS external pump(1750 gph with max head of 39')

Both of those are underrated for a 300 imo. Skimping at the beginning will end up costing you more in the end when you replace and add more equipment on.

What sort of other filtration do you plan to run? DSB's? Refuge with macros? How big of a sump and how much water in there? Intended stock list/bioload? What corals do you intend to keep?

Another thing to consider is energy consumption of what you buy. When deciding between multiple options, energy consumption will make a difference in what you spend long term. Something cheaper now might end up being significantly more expensive over a couple years or more.

Will run dual overflow returns into two 100 micron socks, about a 2-3 inch sand bed, maybe fuge later on...not right away, probably a 55 gallon sump actually filled to about 45 ish gallons, medium stock/bio load mixed reef. LPS middle to lower and SPS up top.

cant go wrong with reef octopus skimmers. also i think you should just start with the fuge and be done and over with it. nothing like trying to work on your tank by adding equipment while filled with water. it sucks lol

i would get the swc skimmer, i have 300,the non cone version, and it is a beast.

Did i read that right, 55g sump filled to 45g, sounds like a sure flood waiting to happen. You want to be able to not have the sump overflow when the power is turned off, also that much water in that size sump sounds like a high water level to me, most skimmers like around 8" of water or so.

Well I'll have a vaccum break where the plumbing goes over the edge of the aquarium. Have that on my current setup and is fail safe. And I can put the skimmer on a stand so that it's in the correct depth

an askoll 1500 provides 2500l/h of air.

The bubble magnus pump provides 1050l/h.

Never used the BM before but I doubt its going to handle 300g. The askoll does 2.4x the amount of air.

The askoll or bb5000 is sized right for a 300-400g tank.
