i am new to the sps coral and i was wandering what equipment besides a good skimmer would people say they couldnt live without for havin a succesful sps tank.

Calcium reactor.
I thought things were fine when I was using 2-part, but the calcium reactor gave me more growth and coloration in a month than I had in the previous 8 months, easy.

This isn't equipment but... Husbandry is your main thing besides equipment that will have a direct effect on your sps.

specifics?

I think he means low nutreant water, plenty of testing to ensure your perams are where they should be, and regular water changes.

ya thanks for all your imput but i was talking like calcium reactor kalk reactor or this ozone stuff ive been reading about phos reactor which of these are essential or anything else ive missed

specifically, i think SPS corals require good lighting, good water, high flow and calcium supplement. meaning...MHs or T5 lighting, RO/DI unit and oversized skimmer, high flow pumps or powerheads (over 30x turnover) and a calcium reactor. using kalk with your top-off water is also a plus. i dont think a kalk reactor or ozone is a necessity because many get by without them.

If you are on a budget I would say save your money for now on a CA reactor and use a 2-part.

Spend your money on a good skimmer something way overrated for your tank and good lighting and flow. A chiller is another good investment (especially if you are in a warmer climate area) as stability is very important to a SPS tank.

The most important things are patience and good husbandry. Rushing into things only leads to more problems and you can spend all the money you want but nothing can make up for bad husbandry.

wow lots of stuff make a successful sps tank. some people do it w/ lots some do it w/ little.

i would say husbandry as MiddletonMark pointed out if the MOST important.

lights, skimmer, ro/di, high flow are essential things that make it easier are ca rx, tunzes, oceansmotions units, chillers, aquacontrollers

A different approach to a Ca reactor that I have on my tank and I just love, is the Aqua-medic reefdoser twin. I dose randy's 2-part with it and use a kalkwasser mixer with my top-off to maintain the PH. None of the hassels that you can have with a reactor, and a fraction of the price. Once dosage is ajusted to your tanks demands you can maintain Ca, alk and PH rock-steady.
