Equipment....under the tank or in the garage?

Thanks for the response Art. Did you do anything special to insulate the shed? How hot does it get outside during the summer where you live?

Its actually a part of the garage. I'm in Southern California, its gets into the low 100's a few days a year. My garage and the room are well insulated, so I'm hoping a fan across the sump will provide all the cooling I need.

I would probably just frame out some walls in the garage and put in a mini-split like you were talking about. I don't know how handy you are, but it's not hard to install non load bearing walls. I'd also vent the mini-split to the outside if you can.

Post 20 is the winner as there is more than enough space under the tank to fit everything. The problem is noise as this puts the skimmer right next to the tank.

Running pipes now allows you to run a BIG skimmer remote. I did this for awhile with an external skimmer in the fish room. The syphon on the herbie fed the external skimmer which dumped into a trash can with a tube back to the main sump. When I added tanks on the filter room I just dropped in a submersible pump.

My sump has baffles so I had the water level in the trash can level with the last sump segment so I could place the ato in the trash can.
I ran high flow sump instead of closed loop with a dolphin amp master pump. The new dc pumps might be a good option if you are sensitive to noise.

I was able to convert the overflow of my 375 to a modified bean animal with a syphon/euros/dry standpipe.

decision has been made....

decision has been made....

First thank you to everyone that has responded with suggestions and advice. As always it is greatly appreciated. I have decided to build a fish room in my garage. After speaking with my brother and estimating the cost of building it, this is the route I will go. Reasons for my decision, my last tank had a fish room and I know how much I loved being able to go in there and just tinker around for a while. My wife would never go near it because she hated the sounds and odors produced back there...little did she know the noise and odors were coming from me :spin2: If I put everything under the tank I know I just wouldnt be happy with it. Another reason is my wife and she has said that I can have any size tank I want as long as I can reduce the noise and odors that come from the tank as much as possible. I know that if everything was under the tank she would never look at the tank with out commenting on any noise or odors coming from the stand. The more visually appealling it is to her the less she complains about the amount of time and money (not that she knows exaclty how much) I spend on the hobby. Once I get my new build thread started I post a link to it in here so anyone that is interested can follow along.

Thanks again!!!

maybe some unions would be a nice addition to the long run of pipes your going to have to the fish room? Incase of any back up, at least you don't have to cut guessing where the pipes are blocked up! make sure they are well insulated.

That was exactly my rationale. You'll be very happy with the decision. Have fun planning!
