Check out this simple mod...

I added a gate valve mod about a month ago and while installing it i had a thought.

When the water is pumped into the skimmer it shoots straight across the skimmer tube and hits the other side.

I added a 90 elbow to the pipe on the skimmer body so the water shoots straight down, right on top of the water exit pipe. The skimmer column is nearly filled with bubbles as apposed to about half full.

From what i have read skimming really comes down to the amount of air you're pumping into the water and contact time. This adjust LOOKS like it provides a lot more contact time.

My question is, have you ever tested such a mod or have any experience with it?

I tried that with my ASM G2, but used a 45. Like you said, bubbles went all the way to the bottom, but oddly enough, skimmer performance decreased. Dont know why. Turbulence??

hmmm, ive had it on there for at least two weeks and performance is about the same.

I posted in the ER forum, so hopefully they will get back to me with a difinitive answer.

CS5-3 questions

CS5-3 questions

The 9x9 footprint, does that include the pump?

Would it be ok for the pump to suck in bubble from the drain of the tank?

Does the water outlet on the skimmer need to be submerged or above the water? Does it matter?

Will this skimmer take to ozone well? How would Ozone hook up to it?

Space is in my 20G sump. Skimmer is going to be for a 60G cube SPS tank.

Which Euro should I purchase for my system with about 130 gallons total? I only have 5 fish, all of which are under 3 inches. The tanks are SPS dominated with a few LPS fillers here and there...

I run a CS8-2RC w/ the new sp4 pump on my 125+50 gallon sump. Now the same skimmer is called the CS180. I've had great results with my unit. Check my gallery for pics if you like.

I have a cs 8-2 and am still considering an upgrade. It does alot better now with the gate valve mod though. For you I would think this would be the minimum starting point.

I'm thinking about one that is rated for around 300 gallons because I will be adding another 130 to the system with Triggers only... What model will work for that? Where is a good site for visualizing the skimmers and prices?

Pat

I have the same size tank (75G + 25G) and I run a ES5-2 with no problems. Bigger is always better though when it comes to skimmers.

I think doing the gate valve mod is a MUST too with any size skimmer. I wish I would have done that day one to my ER!
