Euthanasia

CO2 slowly added to air that a mammal breaths will result in a loss of consciousness followed by death due to a lack of oxygen (displacement of the O2 by the CO2). Bubbling CO2 through salt water won't result in the same effect. It will likely alter the pH and result in more stress for the fish.

I take the fish, throw it in a ziploc and pour in ammonia, the store kind for a couple bux. The fish dies in seconds.

THERE IS NO GOOD WAY TO KILL A FISH WHEN ITS ALWAYS YOUR FAULT.

Well put Luke. It is usually our fault too. I've heard of the ammonia method. I've used the freezer method as well. If someone wants to buy me some MS 222 I'll probably use it! haha just kidding. Luckily I don't have fish die very often. When they do it's because there isn't enough water in my carpet! ;)

I have been told by a friend of mine at work who owns numerous fresh water tanks that his preferred method is:

Fill a container with water, and ice, add salt -- drop fish into said container -- and the salt/ice combo nearly instantly freezes the fish.

I have not personally tried it -- but he swears by it as most humane way.

well, i guess i could use liquid nitrogen from lab. If they find a cure for what fish disease it had, i could try to thaw and save him in the future. :)

Ammonia causes sever burns to the gills, if fish can feel pain this is one of the least humane ways.
Clove oil is a good way to do it, so is M222. Clove oil is easier to get ahold of as well... if you can find a shop that sells all natural/hemopathic (sp?) stuff they will most likely have it

i heard of placing a fish in mountain dew, the CO2 causes fishy to sleep and die in said sleep.

here is a video on it, they even reanimate the fish by using a 9VDC battery as a defibrillator.

Easy:
1 Place fish is plastic sandwich bag.
2 Place bag between folded news paper.
3 Place news paper on floor.
4 Place size 14 shoe containing foot of 220 pound person on news paper.
Instantaneous death.

be carefull with MS-222, it is a carcinogen
Probably only in California... (ever noticed things that are fine everywhere else in the world are "bad" for you in CA?.

What really cracks me up is the firearms legislation they have, "Warning" messages about nitrites and lead in the air after firing a gun can cause serious health issues, not a word about getting shot, it is the residue of the burnt powder and vaporized lead, not the bullet.... only in CA :hehehehehe:

According to the MSDS the carcinogenicity is listed as unknown. Not that I find that enough to consider it not carcinogenic, considering the number of chemicals I've known over the years that were considered safe and are know known carcinogens. In any event, it's not stuff to handle haphazardly.

MS 222 is kinda spendy for us common folk ... I looked into it "way back when" and it was $70 or so in my area and that made the decision simple .... water/freezer.

MS 222...are you crazy ?

i'll cut it's head off with my knife...or smash it with my hammer....come on people ...what could the fish feel , it's instant ...no chemicals, no waiting for it to get poisoned to death...

If you feel so bad for a fish getting smashed or cut, you better be a vegetarian...
