Everyone/Everything is Breeding - Sister, Fire Shrimp, Banggai's, and Clownfish LOL

I have a pair of Banggai's that I got about 6 months ago. I actually had a trio and one was killed in the process. However a pair was formed and they decided to try spawning a month ago. An effort that was short lived and the mail carried for only about 4 days. I am not sure if he ate them or spit them out. I figured it was due to the fact that they were just beginning and learning how to do this, as well as him probably not being able to make it to full term w/o eating. During that time I had another thread about trying to raise little fire shrimp as my now mated pair of fire shrimp were also testing the waters so to speak. I kept them for about 3 1/2 weeks before they completely died out and had tried another unsuccessful batch of 'fry'. I have not had another batch of fire shrimp as they have completely stopped producing for some reason.

However, now the Banggai's have decided to try again. The male has passed his record of four days so I am not excited enough to post and let everyone know. Today is day 10!! My sister is also in the delivery room and I will be an uncle shortly. She is my younger, only sister (2 yrs younger) and I am overly excited now!!

Anyway, he is still holding and will hopefully hold to term. Am a bit nervous though as I expect them to be spat out just after I am supposed to depart to KS to see my new nephew. Leaving my bf in charge of the new fry. We have been together for a while, but he has no clue how to do this stuff lol... I will try to get him caught up to speed on what needs to be done and will be calling every other hour I am sure.

I also wanted to try my luck at starting up a culture of green water to see if I could handle getting the water salinity right (I get the water premixed to the right salinity from the LFS as it saves me from buying RO/DI filter and salt and this is much cheaper this way) and sanitization of the materials used. It seems to have kicked off!!

Lucky since I believe my clowns are starting to get pretty close to each other as well... They have began to clean off a spot in the tank. So I thought I should try learning how to get the rots and the green water going.

WOW...what a learning curve. Especially keeping the fire shrimp babies to Z5 (the fifth stage of their growth, and out of about 15 stages going from z1-z17 or so) I had to learn a lot from Luis - thank you so much Luis - for this...if only they would keep breeding so that I can keep trying to raise them lol...

Well, I will keep you all updated... but I am not sure how pictures and such will be posted as it will only be my man here attempting to follow my instructions on keeping the new arrivals alive while I am back home...Guess we will see, and I will try to post updates/pictures etc... as quickly as possible.

I have read as much as possible on the raising and stages of egg development on all of the things in my tank that have/will have spawned in my tank. So far i have bought several breeding nets for the display tank. I plan on moving the male Banggai into what I have been calling a breeding or baby basket. This way when he spits them out they will be in the same water and same temp. as what they are used to up to then. This will also keep the water volume so that the water degrades at a much slower rate with all of my current filtration that is on the tank. I plan on separating the male from the fry post spit to a separate breeding basket so that he can have time to re-cooperate and have time to get his nutrition before impregnated yet again. Or at least that is how I hope it will play out. I am going to teach my bf how to do the bbs so that he can feed them that until i get back here in MD. My hope is that all the fry make it.

so.....that is my update here from all of the breeding...lol...that has been going on. Gay man stranded with a bunch of breeding going from the tank and from sis lol.... Anyway wish us luck...will need it...or at least my bf will as well as my sis.

will post updates as time progresses.

BTW it's a boy!!

BTW it's a boy!!

Had to go in for a 'c' section as the baby's heart rate kept severely dipping low several times. They thought it was due to the cord being wrapped around the baby's neck...ended up doing the operation and both the baby and my sis are doing fine. The baby was born at 18 1/2" long and 5 lbs 5 oz. so cute!!

Thanx!! Been a crazy week. OK update now that I am an uncle :) Today is day 16 of the term. I have expected the fry to hatch in another 4 or five days and then spit day would be another 4-5 days. I keep trying to look in his mouth and every once and a while he will try to readjust them in his mouth. Or maybe he is turning them over so that they all get equal circulation? Anyway I think they have eyes, but the seem to still be a creamy pink color. I would have thought that they would be starting to look more of a black/white color by now, since it is so close (just days) from hatching. Could it be that they are not as far along as I thought? Or will they change quick now that it is getting close? I know the date that he got pregnant so I don't think i got the day wrong. It is pretty obvious to tell when he has eggs in his mouth. Maybe it is me being impatient.

i plan on trying catch him a couple of days after hatch so I can put him in a breeding net in the same tank. This way it is the same water etc. as the display and if he spits then it is fine as they are fully developed anyway. I just hope that it works since this is my 1st batch of fry ever. Once they hatch and have been spit I have to leave them in my partner's care. I hope that he will be able to keep all of my little projects going (phyto, and feeding schedules with the new fry, etc...). Day 25 of their term is a day after I leave!! Yikes... I hope he can keep it all together for me. I will be out for about 10 days.

My clowns have shown further progress in their spawning. The female has been biting at the male and both of them have been biting at the fire shrimp (who have stopped spawning) because they like to hang out on the same cliff. I put a tile in there a while back and they moved to this spot. I moved it to their new spot and they went back. So i just left it and they have just started showing some love to this spot again. They are cleaning the tile. I have it leaned up against a rock at a diagonal and they have dug a hole in the sand. If a branch of my red macro falls in that area, i have seen the female pic it up and put it in a new area. The male keeps doing headstands and such. I am waiting to see if, I guess it is called an ovipositor, will be showing up soon. I guess that will be visible when the female is close to laying. Just wanted to update on that.

Just counting the days and I split my algae culture that I started. Doesn't seem so hard after. Oops! Might have just jinxed myself. I will give another update soon. Please let me know what you think about the egg coloring of the Banggai's. Kind of worried about that.

Well. the three week mark (day 21) has come and gone and the banggai fry have yet to hatch!! I am not quite sure what to do. I am supposed to leave to go to KS and am flying tomorrow. I was hoping they would hatch by now so that when I do go and capture him to put him in a breeder net the fry would already be hatched and if he spat them out they would be alright...But they have yet to hatch. Not sure what to do...or what I am doing (which is nothing besides observing) to get them to hatch. They are 2 days past due date. I thought, ok maybe just a couple of days longer. Just worried as now this puts the burden of separating him and the fry into the breeder net without me here. Any advice? He is still holding the eggs, but i don't see little faces peeking out at me yet.

Wow!! Tough Crowd

well... not a hatchling yet. I'm away now and my partner is taking care of everything. He couldn't tell if they had hatched just yet, but didn't think so. Well that would make tomorrow day 28 and still no hatch :( still has them in his mouth though so that is a good thing. Well, just to be safe he caught the male and put him in the breeding net. Eggs/hatchlings and male all made it and weren't spat out. Whew!! Just wanted to update everyone.

Hope everyone is well...is anyone out there, out there, out there...

They don't always follow the expected schedule to a T, but it should be soon. Just be sure and give the male sufficient recovery time after spitting out the babies before returning him to the female.

Yeah...I asked Jason to put the male in a separate breeding net from the offspring as soon as all of them are spat out. I asked him to please keep him in there for at least 5 days and feed him lots of mysis. That way the next batch will be carried to term as well.

Thanx for the advice :)

Ok...just getting back to MD from seeing my new neph. very cute :) I wanted to let you all know that before leaving I found that my fire shrimp had eggs, but I didn't want to leave my partner with additional responsibility of trying to raise them while I was gone as well. The Banggai's have completed their 1st batch of fry (they had 12 :) and the male was released into the DT on the second day after spitting. I was told that he wasn't eating and the food was fouling the water. So he was let into the tank to eat etc... I kept asking to see if he was eating and such to verify that he hadn't taken on a new batch. From what I understood he hadn't, but as soon as I got back and looked, I noticed that he did have another larger mouth full of eggs. So hopefully he will carry to term. I suppose we will see; Don't know when they mated/swapped, so I am not sure when we are do for the next batch.

Now my tank is completely swimming in green algea...so I will have try to keep that at bey. Went and got a few things to help out with it...not sure if it is the additional feeding of the fry or the new halides that are creating the problem...probably both. However all 12 fry are doing well and I wish you all luck!

Ok...so the other day i decided that the algae bloom has gone on long enough and that the fry are large enough to upgrade to a small tank (1.5 gal)... I put in some small pieces of liverock, a heater, some water from the display tank where they are being held now, and a filter with an airline for air. The next morning there was one guy that didn't look so hot, so I gave and transfered them back to the main tank. The next morning there were 3 dead 9 alive. yesterday another dead. today 2 more....I don't feel that I have changed anything, but they keep dieing off..... I don't know what to do. I was transfering them to a clean breeder net very carefully and then cleaning the one they had been in. feeding cyclopeez several times daily. Is this just something that happens and now i just have the strong ones that are getting enough food left. Would I fair better to put them in smaller groups of 3's? Can anyone help?

I will be tagging along as I have interest in breeding these guys myself. Its too bad you are not getting more replies. I dont think people check this breeding forum often. ive been reading joyce wilkersons Clownfishes book, but im not sure of any resources on rasing the cardinals or fire shrimp happy to hear about the recent additions and sad to hear about recent losses good luck

tagging along too...sounds like you are having fun...anything else they will eat? or did it seem the ones who died were not eating? maybe all the breeders are on holiday

Probably be better off setting up a small rearing tank for them instead of using the breeding net. A 10 gallon with a sponge filter works well for fry. When they are small, you can run it only half full and raise the water level as needed as they grow.
