Experience mixing yellow and hippo tangs?

Is anyone of the opinion that a full grown hippo tang shouldnt be kept in a tank shorter than 8 feet?

Or is that an extreme idea of the TANG POLICE ?
I wouldn't say that it's an extreme idea PERIOD.

(based on personal experience) a full grown hippo can be cramped in a 225 gallon reef aquarium :)

how many people here have had a 9+" Hippo Tang?

:wavehand:

Personal choice.

Obviously things should not be cramped. That's NO good.
Plan for the future. That's all I can say!
Once your ready for them, Here's to Tank Upgrades!

Not a lot of people can handle them, due to space issues and so forth...
maintenance and power consumption- But personally, I've seen some of the custom home tanks consisting of 1,000+ and higher gallons. One of which houses a school of Hippos amongst others in full reef style!

Ahh... we can dream can't we. :inlove:
Someday, after retirement. That will be me.
When I have nothing left to do but stay home with the custom system.

But I think in a warmer climate than Upstate-Western NY.
That's for sure. :beachbum:
This winter is getting dull.

Well I think I'm gonna nix the idea. Not worth the ich risks, size concerns, and potential aggression from the yellow tang. Sounds like it will probably work, but I'll play it safe this time.

I'll probably try another blue-jaw trigger or get a couple small, bright fish. Thanks for all the information everyone.

just to be clear, I believe it's possible to keep a yellow tang and a hippo tang in a 6ft. long 100 gallon aquarium, Jay. I've seen it done many times.

Just make plans on keeping both of them well fed and make arrangements to filter out the wastes they'll produce.

Nobody likes the looks of a scrawny scarred hippo.

I did misinterpret your post a little. I'll take a day or 2 to think about it, but have a feeling I will eventually get one ;)

I have 3 tangs. Sailfin, Yellow, & Hippo all together.

My dad had all three too, they got along great, just feed them often, actually were planning to have lots of tang in our tank too!

The hippo did get ich, so we mixed some fresh garlic in there food, and he never got them again :) hippos are awesome!
