External overflows

Are external overflows going to cost me much more as opposed to getting the tank drilled in the bottom with an acrylic internal overflow?

Thanks for the help

depends on if you can find a hook up on one. I got one thu someone for 25, but at stores they can go from 50+ Try ebay?

First, you won't be able to have the bottom of the tank drilled if it is tempered glass, which most tank are. You'll probably have to drill the back. I have heard it costing between $10-25 per hole from local glass places, if you can find one who will drill it for you. Then you have to add the cost of a bulkhead which is probably another $10-$20 depending on size. I don't know the cost of an internal acrylic overflow, or where you would get one.

A good hang-on overflow will run you $50-$75. Look for a good used one, as there are no moving parts and they don't really wear out unless they are abused and damaged.

I think you guys are misunderstanding "external overflow". I'm not talking about a hang on overflow, I'm talking about the seperate glass box on the outside that has the holes drilled in it.

And the tank is being custom built so tempered glass isn't a big deal.

Honestly, internal overflows are far more superior than hob because you don't have to worry about overflow limitations, and can always upgrade the pump. Not only that, but there is less room for things going wrong (a friend dropped his u-tube and had to wait a week before he got a replacement). I think it is worth the extra piece of mind, otherwise I would recommend getting a hang on from lifereef.com. Good luck

Read the post before mraafat. Thanks for the reply though.

Heres an example of an external overflow:

(not my tank, don't ask me questions about it)

External overflows should not cost you that much more. I would say 80-100 I am pricing them out right now. Although I will be going Acrylic not glass.
