F /F USB adapters For Aquabus Cables

I contacted Neptune regarding if they offered connectors to alow for extending their Aquabus cables. I was told they did not, but they suggested this

Does anyone know if this is available with the metal parts of the connector covered (covered in plastic like the end of a normal female USB connector is, and if so, where I can get some?
Not really liking the thought of the exposed metal, both because of the environment it'll be used in , or it seems like it would be easy for the fitting to get snagged.
If there is no such design for this fitting, can it be covered with shrink wrap tubing without damaging the connector or cables?

Just get some electrical take or heat shrink tubing and you are good to go.

You can always use a standard USB type A male to USB type A male cable that is the length that you need. USB cable are rated for up to 15ft. However, the Aquabus can use much longer length (can't remember the exact maximum length). If you want longer than 15ft, you will have to custom order. I personally would avoid couplers and extenders.

Yes,but in a 2.0. They are about a quarter the cost of the 3.0.

I use an 'exposed' F/F coupler and just wrapped it with black electrical tape.

I thought a standard USB cable would fry the Apex? Or was that just with the earlier versions?

No, the Apex uses a standard USB cable, however they warn not to plug the Apex into a standard USB device. It may fry the Apex, the device, or both. Standard USB operates at 5V, I believe the Apex is at 12V.

They aren't exactly standard since the connector on one side is different. The Apex uses a USB-A Male to USB-A male cable.

A standard USB extension cable will work. As mentioned above, if you go that route to extend it, use electrical tape or shrink tube to cover the connection between the two cables to insure they don't corrode or come unplugged.

You can get the correct cables in up to 100' lengths. The max I would suggest is 75'.

What I meant is the pinout and terminators are standard USB. Any male to male USB cable will work. Check ebay, they are very inexpensive. I also use shielded around any high voltage cables such as metal halide. As an example, here is an unshielded 15' for a little over $5:
