Fail's SPS 14 Gallon Biocube

How often are you doing water changes and are you dosing at all or are you w/c keeping up with the demand ?

I am doing water changes once a week.

I change granulated lignite carbon every 2 weeks.

I change GFO in the reactor once a month.

I am dosing 5ml (more or less) of B-Ionic daily. No scheduled time, just whenever I remember during the day.

That reminds me... Brb

Cool tank

I like the simple and minimal aquascape.....lord knows, what a mess I'd end up with if I tried out a nano

Thanks Bello! Your tank is an inspiration for when I go big.

I still have one too many rocks in there. The big tank will give me the space to really do minimalist style.

I would love to try out a nano :p, but I doubt that with my current situation I doubt I'd be able to keep up :(......

I've seen a lot of biocubes on various forums, yours is certainly one of the nicest . Any plans of going big in the near future?

This is weird...I can see the pic on tapatalk, but not on the comp?.....some formatting issue I guess....

But yes, I see 40 breeder, nice dims and should look really sweet

And again, thank you for the kind words. It really means a lot.

The 40 is going to be a sump. Haven't decided on the size of the display yet, but it will be something of the Savvy persuasion.

Tapatalk acts strange on my phone...

Sump, eh?? Very nice

I'm not from the US, so not quite familiar with the dimensions of the Savvy's..... but either way, looks like you're going pretty big......

Take your time on the display dims.... need to get that right first time around

I figured lol, cocky Americans just assume the rest of the world knows what we are talking about.

Reef Savvy custom build. Have some dimensions in mind, but it won't be until late next year/early 2015.

Your nano SPS reef is a little ripper mate. I hope you don't mind but i had a fiddle with PS so i could see the corals without the harsh blue wash that LED's tend to photograph - won't be spot on but i hope it's close.
Your tank puts many much larger and convoluted setups to shame and i mean that mate, in Aus i wouldn't say ' and i mean that mate ' i would actually say ' and i'm not blowing wind up your arse mate '
You US guys would just stand bewildered with a beer in your hand at an aussie BBQ if you tried to follow the conversations lol.

Back on topic - can you tell us a bit more about the water parameters you keep, how you keep them and what foods go in the tank please mate. :)

I love you for this. The complements and the fixing of my sh*t photography. Thanks for understanding the strife of LEDs.

Anyway... I keep my parameters at:

7dhk KH
430ppm Ca
1350-1400dkh Mg

I have the first chamber with an Innovative Marine reactor tumbling GFO.

Second chamber has my InTank Media Rack. Filter floss/Lignite Carbon/Chaeto top to bottom.

Third chamber is the heater/temp probe/upgraded return pump.

I change the filter floss about every 3 days.

I have a reefkeeper lite with 2 power bars. It basically runs everything minus dosing and top off.

I dose manually. Hardly dose Mg. 5ml part A and a little less part B of B-Ionic.

I feed once or twice a day depending on how hungry my Six Line looks. Spectrum New Life and A+.

Occasionally I feed mysis and Ova.

I feed BRS Reef Chili at night every once in a while. Maybe once or twice a week.

I currently buy my water from my LFS. I'm moving soon so I will be making my own. I got the RODI 4 stage sitting in the closet right now. Haven't decided on the salt brand yet.

Great tank, love the colors. Your birdsnest looks crazy. Did it start out smaller?

My birdsnest started as a 1" little tree. It has since turned into the "Pamonti Cap" it is now. The Red Monti Cap loves growing into/onto it and they have started to become one kinda.

Thanks for all the details on your husbandry techniques mate, all sounds good and makes sense. I basically do the same as you but in a larger volume of course and our water is pretty similar.
Can you share the specifics of your actual LED bulbs and layout because i don't think you quite realise just how good the results are that you're getting under LED only lighting mate. You have saturated colors like me which isn't common from most of the LED pics i see so i want to copy your lighting over my sump tank - like i seriously want to copy your LED layout because your getting good colors across the board with what must be a very limited number of bulbs.
Nothing looks better than SPS entwining each other and allowed to sort out their space between each other rather than keeping them apart. That monti with the seri over it looks great - keep doing what you're doing

No worries. I was eventually going to get around to posting the maintenance info eventually. Just been lazy.

The lighting is Rapidled Biocube 14 kit. 6 cool white 6 royal blue. Both channels are dimmable. Blues at 100%, whites at 50%ish.

I initially liked the colors on that stock setup of the kit, but I noticed something was a little off. About 8 months ago I decided to add the supplemental "UV" 4 LED kit from rapid. I have them attached to the same power cord as the blues. Separate drivers. They run at 700mah, but when the rest of the lights are on they are washed out. It has added pop, and I feel like I am closer to a spectrum that the corals are happy with.

Growth has been great, but like I said in a previous post, it could have been any number of things. The death of the pests? The stabilization of parameters? The addition of broader spectrum? Maybe the 3?

Well, this is an american forum, so the assumption was logical, though the lack of named corals in my setup, would be a dead giveaway. I'd be all over those if I lived in the US :p

The edited pic looks much nicer. It's difficult to photograph your reef under leds. Any plans of purchasing a DSLR cam?
