In general, Pseudocheilinus wrasses, such as your Mystery wrasse, don't mix well with and fairy (Ciirrhilabrus) and flasher (Paracheilinus) wrasses.

BTW, the Mystery wrasse is "meanier." :)

anyone notice with the younger mystry warsse that they tend to be more dull red and as they get older or larger get the vibrant viloet. ?

Yes can someone tell me were i can see a pic of a male condei's fairy. my LFS gave me a wrasse that was beat all up 3 months ago. And it is healed all up very nice now. I dont have a camera to take a pic. but its red and white with yellow fins on its back. It's the only wrasse i have so i would like to find it a mate. MAYBE someone can help me out are point me were to look. thanks

I have a question for the wrasse experts, I have a 6" Australian Scott's and I noticed one day that when he flares his fins he has a spike that sticks up in front of his dorsal fin? I was wondering what its for, I think its for fighting but I'm not an ichthyologist.

Fairy Wrasse Harem/Chromi Shoal
Hows it going. I am starting a 55 G SPS(mainly Acro) reef over from a softie reef. Now that I have all my equipment I was thinking about which fish to put in. I have thought about a shoal of chromis(like 4 or 5) or a harem of fairy wrasses. When i say fairy wrasses I dont mean the larger species of wrasse(like Scott's and what not), but in particular I am speaking of

-C. filamentosus(Whipfin Fairy wrasse)
-C. rubripinnis (Red fin fairy wrasse)
-C. cyanopleura(blue sided fairy wrasse)

These fariy wrasses avg. about 1.5"-2.75" according to most sources.

If you need a refresher as to what exact species I am referring to check here:

www.marinecenter.com

and

www.fishlibrary.info

My questions are as follows:

1) I have a Copperband Butterfly that I have had for 2 years and I will probably keep him in the SPS tank. (as a side note)
-Can i keep a harem of one of these smaller species(like 1 male and 2 females) in a 55g tank?with a CBB?
2)I know I can do a shoal of 4 or 5 chromis in the 55 with the CBB but can i do the shoal, the fw harem, and the CBB. Just the shoal of chromis and the harem of fairies?
3)Those who keep fairy wrasses or particularly these species---How bad are they at jumping out of your tanks? How do you remedy this, but keep the light over the tank for your coral?
4)So really--a shoal, harem and a cbb or a shoal and harem---or just a shoal and CBB(FW harem possible?) or just a harem and CBB(if it is possible but not with chromis)

Here is my setup and physical circumstances so that you can better assess the question.

-55g as i stated
-Tunze stream 6000 with single controller and two returns (plenty of flow as i said its gonna be SPS)
-dual overflows(one for sump with skimmer and other for a 30 g refugium)
-T5 lighting(fixture not retro)
-lots of live rock(how much swimming space should be allowed)
-no canopy
-blah blah blah Im long winded(careful attention to detail and finesse=success)

Thank you everyone I hope that i can get all the info based upon your experiences.

Oh by the way------FOR THOSE OF YOU WITH FAIRY/FLASHER WRASSES IN A REEF--HOW DO YOU KEEP THEM FROM JUMPING OUT WHILE LIGHTING YOUR REEF!!!???

With regard to jumping, the only fool proof way I know is a canopy (which then requires fans). Egg crate is problematical except for large fish which cannot fit through; some fairy and flasher wrasses can get through and go carpet surfing. Covers are ok if you don't need SPS type lighting but they do diminish the light a fair amount.

Any one have any experience with this Pencil wrasse? Okay to keep with fairys?

Just an update on my clan of Fairies & Flashers.

Curently the stock list is:

Paracheilinus cyaneus ( Blue Flasher wrasse)
Paracheilinus mccoskeri ( McCosker's Flasher wrasse)
Cirrhilabrus lubbocki ( Lubbock's Fairy wrasse)
Cirrhilabrus adornatus ( Debelius' Fairy wrasse)
Cirrhilabrus rubrisquamis ( Rosy-scales Fairy wrasse)

They are all male specimens at least I think they are. The only one under question is the new McCosker's I just added. The king of the tank is definetly the Debelius wrasse he is constantly chasing the others whenever they approach him. I just added the McCoskers today & he is the smallest of the wrasses by far. It was really cool watching him flash at all of the other wrasses when they came to investigate him. Below is the best pic of the Rosy-scale I could manage. In the flasher thread I will post a pic of the new McCoskers'. I just LOVE these labroids!!!

Here is a collection of C. rubrisquamis, female & males. I have kept several individuals and took more than 100 shots of the species until now; only a few of them are good like these.

blface, you can take the better shots of yours so soon.

Hey Dr. T. I just noticed that one of the pics of the C. rubrisquamis in Kuiter's Fairy Wrasse book is from you.

blface,

Thank you for your note.

I showed another pic of a fairy wrasse that is almost entirely black in Kuiter & Debelius' World Atlas (2006) as C. lunatus but now I suspect it is C. brunneus Allen, 2006 or even an undescribed species from Cebu.

I am now confused. Are there two variants on C. bathyphilus? There is an excellent picture of what I call (and own a pair of) hooded fairy wrasses in Dr. Tanakas excellent article at http://www.reefkeeping.com/issues/2006-06/ft/index.php However, the picture at http://www.reefs.org/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=69550& shows a different named variant called Rosy Fin Fairy wrasse. Marine Center shows the same (maybe identical) picture for C. bathyphilus. What is the true picture (if you will pardon my early morning pun)?? Are there two different species? One species with multiple variants? And of course, the ultimate question of whether they can coexist in the same tank (320g). Any assistance would be appreciated.

snorvich,

You are keen on C. bathyphilus, and they are the same species.

My article shows a male from Vanuatu (called Hooded Fairy Wrasse in Vanuatu) and the one shown in
http://www.reefs.org/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=69550&
is from Holmes Reef of Australia (Rosy-fin). They are differing in coloration and I (with my friend) am writing a paper on the species, that will be submitted soon. Now I am sorry; I cannot tell in detail but it may be out next year.
