Well finally got the supposed C. Lancelatus, according to your description it looks like a Rosefascia to me. It does have the largest eyes I have ever seen on a Fairy wrasse.

bubbaOPPD,
It certainly is Cirrhilabrus roseafascia. Juveniles have larger eyes than adults. Also it is a deep-water dweller so with larger ones.

The difference between this and C. lanceolatus is the coloration of pelvic fins; the latter has a blue-black spot on anterior part of fins (see photo and compare).

MarvinsReef,
C. cenderawasih was just described by Gerry Allen from Irian Jaya, Indonesia. The 44th member in the genus. It greatly is similar to C. walindi from Papua New Guinea but with four spots on back and a prominent yellow band on side. Females are almost identical in appearance.

wrasseguy2,
It is a very nice selection !

Did you guys see the new wrasses announced today? I saw it on Yahoo. A flasher and a fairy. Discovered off New Guinea.

edit: Sorry didn't see Marvin's post. There was a pic of the flasher too I just can't find it now.

Thanks for the info Dr. Tanaka the fish I got is actually 10cm long from nose to tail. He just looks small in the bag plus I got him for a good price and began eating within 15mins of being put in the tank.

H.Tanaka,

I've had a Labouti for 6 months now and I always thought it was a male. However I just purchase a female online and when it arrived it looked very similar to the one I already have. How can you tell the difference between a male and female Labouti? I'm concerned about adding the "female" labouti which is currently in my Quarantine Tank to my display tank if it actually is a male. I'll try and get a photo of the new Labouti as soon as I can.

Here is the one I've had in my display for 6 months. Is this a male and how can you tell?:

A very nice picture.

Males have two prolonged spines on anal fin, while females do not. Your specimen is intermediate in pattern, and the spines will be longer gradually with growth. I would call it a young male.

Not labouti or Labouti's Fairy Wrasse but laboutei, Laboute's Fairy Wrasse. It was based upon an ichthyologist's name, Pierre Laboute of New Caledonia.

Thank you so much for your expertise!

Are the two spines on the male the ones closest to the head on the anal fin? I think I see them in the picture but I just want to make sure.

The first two spines of anal fin will prolong in male stage.

OK here is the female I ordered who is now in my Quarantine Tank. This was the best picture I could get as she is still kind of shy.

Does it look like a female? To me it looks almost the same as the one above. However I was unable to get a good look at the anal fin.

Thanks again!

Yes, it seems to me still a female by appearance.

One might call the previous specimen a larger female. It is difficult to tell the sex exactly only by shape or coloration on occasion. No female can change to male just over a night.

Well, a male specimen of C. exquisitus from Line Islands was actually a female by examination of its sex organ (Randall, 2005).

Hello everyone. I have some not so great news. Appearently all of my livestock decided it's time to give me some stress. First my new pair of clowns aren't working out so hot. Now the continued problems i've been having with my female solorensis get a bit worse. For the past few weeks she has been extreamly skittish. She has attempted to jump numerous times for no reason at all. It was to the point where i was wondering if shes afraid of my newer (about a month ago) lighting upgrade to MH. Now it continues. Everytime i walk up to the tank she immediatly hides and will not come out for a good 3-5 minutes after i leave. I really hardley get to see her eat becasue of this. I'll drop food in the tank and walk away to see if she comes out to eat. After waiting a good amount of time, my clowns eventaully consume all of whats out and i just get agitated and walk away. I've seen her come out to get a little bit, but hardley anything is left by the time she comes out and when i go to put more in she hides again. Do you guys have any thoughts as to a possible cause of this? I'm really clueless at this point and i'm extreamly dissipointed with this fish.

Thanks,

Cory
