Dr.Tanaka,

I hope you will visit this thread sometime soon and help me clear up question about sex of my two, recently aquired fairy wrasses
Cirrhilabrus luteovittatus.

Not to bore you with details, but I ordered one fish and instead recieved two, both appears to be males. I observed them for couple of days and so far I have failed to see any fighting between them( which is rather surprizing to me). From what I had read about this species the males differ from the females by having a broad, yellow band running from just behind pectoral fin to the caudal fin.

Here;s my questions: :D

1. Do you concur that this both fishes are males?
2. Could they be a "bonded pair" of males?
3. Are they different sexes?

Here are some images I managed to take of them and actually one image shows that they bunk for the night together.

First( I think this one is definately a male)

This fish looks a tad different in the dorsal and anal fins, but that could be just a simple difference between the two fishes that occurs naturally.

And here;s that image of their cave where they managed to evict another fish and take over. :D

Thank you in advance!

zenya -- I think both are males but the second is less developed. As these are in nature a shoaling fish, it may be that males are tolerant of other males. I think they are found in Australia.

On a different note, I was able to purchase C. lanceolatus from Live Aquaria. It will be here on Tuesday. I am excited as this is the first one I have seen for sale. I already have C. roseafasciata but they will not go in the same tank. If I am able I will post pictures on Tuesday.

is this the C. lanceolatus or is it the pintail wrasse. i got what i thought to be a lanceolatus from them a while back but it was a much more stunning pin tail. get pix up asap. either way great find:)

Well, I don't buy for rarity although I have some very rare ones. My roseafasciata is gorgeous and the one on Live Aquaria is very different but I did not think to check if it is a pintail wrasse. When I get it I will post pictures. As I have two moderately large tanks, there should be no problem in any case. Anyone got a URL for the pintail? Thanks!

this is my pin tail. i got it as a lanceolatus. in ruiter's fairy book it calls it a C.cf lanceolatus so you cant really blame them but if you're unhappy i'll gladly take it off your hands:)

No, I think I have a good home for mine. Yours is gorgeous. Thanks for the picture, I am a terrible aquarium photographer!

i also have a pair of C. roseafacia and they get along fine. i've been looking for another pintail for a while now to pair up with mine. the rarest of the fairies that i know of. i see rhomboids and linneatus and others much more often.

I too prefer to buy pairs (sometimes harems) so I will have to continue looking to see if I can get lucky. LA has C. roseafasciata with fair frequency but I have not seen a pintail/lanceolatus previously.

I have a pair of both Earle's and Johnsons (from Brian) and they have grown by about a third since I have had them. The male Earle's is now double the female.

oh by the way. before i lost my rhomboids, they DID NOT get along with the pin tail at all. the similar shape tail must have been the reason because they dont have similar colors.

The C. roseafasciata is in with my rhomboids and there is no problem. The pintail goes into my larger tank with various flashers and one Pyle male, a pair (sort of) of C. bathyphilus, a pair of C. katherinei and a juvenile C. lineatus. I notice that LA might have a female C. roseafasciata in divers den. Either that or a juvenile male.

zenya - both are males but one is a submale. i think most if not all of them entering the trade are coming from the Marshalls (i just had a few of those from there)

rhomboids are actually pretty rare. I get Marshalls direct and they are rarely in the orders (even at other wholesalers) It might be just Majuro atoll that they aren't abundant though. I talked with Brian and he was telling me Kwaj has much more then Majuro.
He was also the only one getting Earlei's and Johnsonis! Which are much more rare then the pin tails.

Thanks, Ninong, I totally forgot to mention their size...DOH! :D

zenya, I forgot to mention how much I like your photographic images (and, of course, the fish). I don't have this species because I heard they are semi-aggressive. Do you have other fairy wrasses in that tank? Where did you get them from?
