Look at the front of the anal fin, if there are 2 very long thin fins that flash up and down you have a male.

Friends,

Thank you for various comments and pics. I have been busy with many things, including preserving specimens (for DNA), writing several MS and attending meetings.

I had a glance for a while and should have returned to other works. I have a free time for seeing the threads and pics all day long (hopefully).

pyleis will vary in price. the lowest and most usual is 100$-150$. Most entering the trade are coming from Vanuatu, but some are coming from australia (more $$$). the aussie are suppose to be a lot nicer, however i havn't seen one yet. An aussie collector i talked to said they are 10x better then the vanuatu ones... i can only hope to get some!!!

Would love to see a pic of the Austrailian Pylei.

Tanaka- have you seen one?

Youngle84- nice clam, but wrong thread? :)

Picked up a female pylei, she is close to 3 inches. Everything about her looks like a female except for the long pectorial fins. Perhaps she was changing into a male?

i just picked this pylei from the fish store i work at, i got it for $30 can anyone tell me how much one of these go for?

i also have got 4 laboutei wrasses from the store i work at and i dont know if they are MALE OR FEMALE? i looked at the anal fin and dont really see the two larger spike fins on any of them. they are two 3inch ones to two 4 inches ones. if they are not males or dominant males will one change to become the dominant male and be more vibrant in color?

here are some pictures odf some of them couldnt get good shots but here:

nice find. the pyleis usually go for 100$ 30 is wholesale price usually (i think)

if they are 4" most likely they are submales. good grabs!

heuerfan,
No, there is no record of pylei from Australia. Is it sure that it comes from there? Perhaps via Australia.

bubbaOPPD,
It is a young male opunctatus; females are entirely reddish.

YoungLe84,
It is too cheap for any pylei, especially for those from Vanuatu shown in your photos.

Unusual shapes for female laboutei; 4 inches ? Males have two prolonged spines (1st and 2nd) from anal fin without exception as far as I know.

well i know its a pylei from vanuatu because thats were the shipment came from and thats what i got if for since those pictures are from my quarintine tank, i think the LFS i work at didnt really know what it was and mistaked it for a rubymarginalis so i grab it imediately!!!

Tanaka - on one of my australian lists they have pylei fairy wrasses on the list... there really isn't any known pylei in that area?

youngle - it is a pylei, you might have payed cost or just above it.
they wholesale for more then that sometimes.
