I'm still not 100 percent clear on difference between
fairy and flasher (wow, all sorts of inappropriate jokes
just came to mind:p ) but here's my new Eight Line Flasher
(or at least that's what I paid for!:)

Fairy wrasses belong to the genus Cirrhilabrus and flasher wrasses belong to the genus Paracheilinus.

The eight-line flasher wrasse is Paracheilinus octotaenia.

:D

I am thrilled with the little guy.
I am curious about his color compared to others I've
seen online. Will he change as he ages? Is it in fact
a male?

Hey I was just checking i tryed reading the thread but i didn't see do royal gammas pick on fairy wrasses? I had one about 3 months ago and it was fine at first and seemed to chase the gamma. But all the sudden he stoped eating and was breathing really heavy. I try putting him in isolation but he still wouldn't eat. and died in the end. i really love fairy wrasses but it kills me when one dies.

My gramma leaves everyone alone and everyone leaves him alone...after an initial let's see who's boss episode. I caught my dominant labouti male in a jaw lock with my big gramma a few months ago. No damage. I'm certain the labouti initiated it and the gramma finished it. Now my labouti goes out of his way to avoid the gramma. All the gramma does to new fish is go up to them and open his mouth wide. They leave him alone after that.

I just saw a Gold Flank Fairy Wrasse at my LFS. Can anyone provide any information on this fish. I've done some searches and haven't found anything. It has a blue head and the back part of the fish is a beautiful variety of colors. Any info would be appreciated. Are these fish rare?

I just googled "Gold Flank Fairy Wrasse" and came up empty. Is that the name the LFS gave it?

I wonder if it's the same as the Orange-back Fairy Wrasse (Cirrhilabrus aurantidorsalis)?

It's neither of those two fish. It was described as a Gold Flank fairy wrasse. The front half of the fish looks like a Scott's fairy. Right behind the fins on each side are gold marks. It's really a stunning looking fish. I'll try to post a picture tonight. My camera is at my girlfriend's house right now. I got it locally for $45.

Based on your description it is most likely a male C. lyukyuensis. The origination could be Malaysia but there is also a Japanese instantiation. If you are getting this it more likely originates in Malaysia. I always hate the LFS common names that are tagged onto fish as they are descriptive but not useful.
