Is there anyone out there with experience keeping fairy wrasses, would like maybe
to add one to my tank but have heard they are notorious carpet surfers i do have
a hood on the tank, i guess my question is what precaution do you take when your
doing routine maintenance in the tank like water changes or adding or moving
corals so you don't spook the fish???

Anything or nothing can spook the fish!... If you want to keep wrasses and basically any other fish, you should have the tank covered

I have a flasher wrasse in dt and a fairy in qt now.. the flasher usually will hide into the rock when im doing maintenance.. but when the flasher was in qt, he jumped many feets when i was trying to pickup a different fish.. just keep an eye on them when doing maintenance and try to close the canopy/ lid when you are not around.. the fairy in the qt also hides when im doing water changes..

Also if i do water change in the morning before the lights come up, the wrasse would still be inside the rock work sleeping.. it might help as well..

Imo, jumping is not a big issue if you have a tight fitting lid/canopy.. good luck ..

Just keep an eye on the fish's whereabouts when you put your arm or something else into the tank. It wont freak out and jump if something enter to the water, at the other side of the tank. But if you suddenly push your arm into the water, just above the wrasse, it might jump. Be extra carefull if the fish is very close to the surface of the water.

Mine generally go and hide within the rock work when I do maintenance inside the tank. So it should generally not ben an issue for the activities you described, they tend to hide during those.

I was under the impression it was no good to keep the tank tightly sealed, that there would be issues with oxygenation?
What is acceptable?

1/4" screen cover... only blocks fish, not oxygen or light

As mentioned above, they are jumpers. Once acclimated, they are very hardy and active. Will pretty much eat anything (except Nori, IME).

Other than being jumpers and sometimes having issues when mixed with other wrasses, you shouldn't have a problem if you stick with the generally peaceful temperament varieties.

I have Hawaiian Flame wrasses and they get spooked almost everyday, my lid definitely stopped them from jumping out. Wrasses are my favorite fish, but without a lid it's impossible to keep them.

Many of them are such greedy eater that they jump at me when I open the cover to feed them. They just bounce off my net cover and fall back into the water.
They are absolutely the most colorful fish you can keep.

I soak all my food and feed through a baster so no one has a chance to be greedy til I allow them but otherwise I could see it as a problem as mentioned above. I have a tight fitting canopy however for extra precaution to ensure no jumping when I open it I too as mentioned above have the DIY BRS screen kit. All 4 of my wrasses are hardy and active and most don’t really spook much anymore when my arms in the tank etc. The only exception would be my flasher will occasionally spook himself and has jumped into the screen 3-4 times. I prefer the screen over glass for the gas exchange, minimal light loss, not having to clean salt creep. The screen also isn’t as hard and has some give meaning if they do jump they are less likely to receive a spinal injury from hitting a hard top or canopy. Just my thoughts and experiences.
