hello all, I just got a very small crocea clam blue and it died one night after it was placed in my tank, sucked clean from its shell not a spec left. My water is pristine and it was fully open just after acclamation. I have no idea what ate it i have a trigger but the clams shell was completely intact, i also have a yellow tang coral banded and skunk cleaner shrimp two tomato clowns one lawn mower blenny and one neon goby and a few nassarius snails. I want to keep a clams but i will not allow organisms of such beauty to just die in my tank like that I am ****ed at my self for letting such a thing happen in my aquarium. If any one has any idea of what may have happened please let me know!!

Oh my god i have Whelk's I have had one for some time now he came in as a hitch hiker. It only comes out at night and looks just like a nassarius but darker with a leopard print snout!! I never thought he would be dangerous but now that i know, he must go! Do they reproduce in the aquarium??? i know i have one and have had him for a long time if i remove him will my tank be safe to try a clam again???

Yes, they do reproduce, but if you've only seen one and it's been there for a long time you're probably safe. Some snails can carry sperm inside themselves for long periods of time and continue to reproduce, but it sounds like you're well past that period.

Just throw the snail in your sump/fuge if you have one or give it to someone that does. No need to kill a perfectly good clean up crew animal for doing what evolution has taught it to do :)

agh, both of those looked exactly the same! I'm paranoid now.... must go check for whelks...........
