Picked up this piece at a LFS about 2 weeks ago. Using the Borneman book I haven't been able to figure out if its Favia or Favites... and well its bugging me :( Any ideas?

The two white specks on it are actually feather dusters which are somehow in the skeleton. It inflates nicely during the day and puts out feeding tentacles at night in response to cyclopeeze. Haven't noticed any sweepers yet.

favities have coralites that connect. thus, your looks to be a favia of some sort.

cut of a couple coralites, and bleach them. buy, or borrow, Veron's Corals of the Would set and ID it from there. That's the best way to get an accurate guess. It's still a guess since morphology can be different within the same species.

Thanks! There are some skeletons under the current colony which are encrusted with some sponges or other stuff, so no need to remove a polyp. The whole "chunk" isn't an actual rock but a large old skeleton which I assume got buried at one point.

Well if you figure out what it is, let me know. I was given it's twin brother a month ago and haven't been able to identify it yet.
