Deep Reef

I have a favia that I have at the bottom of my 24" deep dt, I have a 6 bulb tek fixture. Is this a good placement or should I raise it up and place on the rock?...just wandering....

I would keep there for now & see how it responds. You might want to pick it up, and then gently set it back down every now & then though. This will keep the edges from getting buried in the sand and deteriorating. GL.

I agree with post #2. Keep the tissue away from the sand. Over the long term it seems to cause recession in some cases. It's a good idea to keep it above the sand bed by placing it on a piece if egg crate or flat rock rubble if you can.

Personally. I would find a location on your live rock that suits your favia. That's their natural environment and they will encrust & expand in that location. I have a 6 bulb T5 w ATI bulbs in an 18" deep tank. Favias of different types can handle all light levels in my tank but in the top 1/3 they can initially bleach a little bit but will adapt. The middle 1/3 of the tank seems to be the sweet spot. They also do well mounted vertically so don't be afraid to mount it that way if you like the look.

The sweeper tentacles are potent and can extend a few inches, so be careful what corals you mount "down wind" from a favia. Nice little cony you have there. GL.

I agree with all posts, and have in my tank favias that love high light and some that bleach with the slightest amount. Most will do well mid tank, only depending on the light types. T5's are pretty intense, and since you cant really dim(unless its a dimmable fixture) i would keep it on the outsides of the tank, where the par is lowest.

Mines been on the SB for 5yrs...no recession at all. But it sure has grown in a very unique way :) I've gotten 6 frags from it already. Here are 2 waiting for new homes.

Interesting. The favia I lost on a sand bed years ago was a Christmas favia just like yours. Now that I think about it, it was before I got a MP40 pump and the current might have been insufficient. In cant be sure, but I suspect a bacterial infestation was the cause.

I purchased another one and it is has grown like gangbusters on the LR in several locations in the top 2/3 of the tank & most of the colony is growing on a vertical plane. This is the species that I was referring to when I was noting some minor bleaching on the upper, most exposed portion of the colony.
