Favia questions

Hi,
HEard a lot of mixed opinions on Favia positioning and actually got some in very different locations (flow and lighitng) and they all look fine still very slow growth.
Where do you usually put them and are they usually fast growers?
Thanks.

depends on the type of favia..many different kinds but do not think many are "fast" growers..how long have you had it?

p.s. all of mine are on the bottom or on the bottom third of the tank..hth

I have a Christmas favia that I got as a 10 head frag and have it on its own piece of LR on the sand bed. It is under 300 total watts of halide lighting with no supplemental actinic. I got it on Dec 27th 2008 and it has almost tripled in size since. I was target feeding it like once per week but rarely do anymore. It is insanely aggressive and sends out 4-5 inch sweepers any time a new lps is added to the tank. So, it stays by itself, isolated and alone. Serves him / her right :)

Some need intense light to keep their coloration, others prefer more protection. Generally, a happy Favia will inflate it's tissue quite impressively when it's in a place it likes. They sometimes look like the tissue around the perimeter is melting like candle wax.

I've found growth rates on mine are much faster when they are placed on smooth pieces of rock than when they are placed on sand. I've had some calcify and attach to rocks in a matter of a couple weeks when left undisturbed.
