Well that is why I made the poll so you can select multiple bulbs. That way you can vote for the bulb for growth and looks. I only put growth options on bulbs that are offten considered high par.

From what I have read the aquaconnect is the bulb that has the best looks/PAR combo. But it is so pricy that very few people run them (and thus I think very few votes for them).

AB 10k (13k) for growth

Reeflux 12k (for looks and just might become my favorite after I learn more about PAR and long term results).

Look good but low PAR.


I use XM 10K's with 2 40 watt URI Superactinics. The 10K's without the supplemental lighting looks very white. You get a slight blue color with the actinics.

I hear the 14K pheonix bulbs are good as well.

I like XM 10K for both the looks and growth, I don't really like that super blue look.

I voted for the AB 10k's but they are the only bulbs I have ever owned. I do like them a lot, very very very brite crisp white light and great growth rates on my sps. Im leaning towards the reeflux bulbs for my next set, their cheap and i have read great things about them. I havent decided which bulb tho, 10 or 12k. but I have a few more months on the AB's to decide.

The way I understand it the lower the Kevlin the higher the par as a general rule. So the 15k's would have a higher par.

Also on the note that the XM's have 30% of the votes....when you vote on this poll you can select more than 1 bulbs at a time....so i am sure several people voted for all three xm's at 1 time. So what I am trying to say is it is not exactly 30%, but rather a lower number. Plus I have not really heared a lot of XM bashing on here.

As far as PAR goes on the 250W bulbs..

The 250w XM 10K is one of the best bulbs on any ballast (not the best, but in the top 5 atleast). The XM 20K is somewhat in the middle, not great for growth but they look good. The XM 15K have tested lower PAR than the XM 20K... they have good color, but the growth probably sucks.

Does seem backwards too. It is probably one of the few exceptions to the generalization of "higher kelvin, less par" rule. Sanjay (I think) tested these bulbs a while back.. you can find info on it in the Lighting/Equipment forum.
