Feeding Angels to Thrive?

Use only fresh seafood that smells fresh. It smells strong and bad when it goes bad. Also, rinse it under tapwater before chopping it up and blot the water off with paper towels.

Thanks doc- I do rinse as well, and then soak in a cup of tank water with aminos and NO MORE GARLIC

garlic isn't good for their liver...

okay I missed this part :

Terrestrial plant lipids are well known to cause heart and liver lesions in marine fish. The problem with feeding terrestrial plant oils (not just garlic but any terrestrial plant oil) to reef fish is problematic due the nature of the lipids the fish do not possess the enzymes to digest them correctly and this leads to fatty deposits and serious pathological changes in the heart and liver of fish that are fed these lipids. Although these are not instantly fatal they cause chronic change to these organs and long term deterioration in the health of the fish. Granted much of this his work is done on farmed fish, but it is a well known phenomena and here are some of the research papers that detail this problem.

so from it, basically feeding broccoli or lettuce would eventually have the same effect ?

but then checking the famous rod's food which copps uses ....

Ingredients include:
Shrimp, Scallop, Oyster, Clam, Squid, Octopus, Perch, Green Nori (porphyra sp), Red unroasted nori (porphyra sp) Mysis, Krill, Pacific plankton (Euphausia sp.) Brine shrimp, Frozen red cyclops, Fish eggs, Oyster eggs, Golden pearls (all sizes), Broccoli, carrot, Garlic, Selco, Astaxanthin (Haematococcus pluvialis), Beta-meal (Dunalliella Salina), Freshly harvested rotifers, freshly hatched baby brine shrimp.

it contains garlic and more plant lipids !

I used to use garlic and that brand of food but stopped...there are some who just use pe Mysis, enriched brine, nori, fresh seafood, and an angel fish blend and that is all...
Selcon every now and then...

Humaguy that is some excellent information. I've not really ever used terrestrial plants or garlic in feeding, but it is good to know there are good reasons to avoid them.

Thanks for the info huma, very informative.
I stopped using garlic a long time ago just because I didn't think it was adding anything beneficial.

NLS pellets are great, IMO they help the fish both put on weight and grow faster than fish that will not eat them

More than 2 feedings will help, I feed my fish 3-5+ times a day.

I have the NLS pellets and may add a 3rd feeding
1. Algae in the am
2. NLS pellets
3. Mixture of frozen

Sound good enough for the kings and queens of the sea?

I have a FOWLR and also thought of trying to add a live sponge to the tank, feeding it, and essentially having it for angel food. Any thoughts of trying that since it is their natural diet? Or just stick with the frozen angel food? I have a Gold Flake coming Tuesday - Huma if you are reading this I got the 3 in. one from PIA -psyched. - and want to thrive.

cool, Kevin and pia are awesome...you will be very impressed with the quality of the fish and the packing...I have kept sponges for angels and it never really worked out as the angels destroyed them fairly quickly, or the trigs swam around the tank with them, lol...hikari has an angel food with sponge...I did stop feeding dry food following the lead of many folks in here that are far more intelligent than I....

I have kept several Goldflake Angels over the years and they are not usually any problem to get eating just about anything that I put in the tank.

The one I have currently (for a little over a year) likes red zoas, and red blastos, and occasionally wipes out colonies of expensive Zoas. But I have noticed that she (assumming a she since she is so good at making me mad) decimates a zoa colony and leaves one or two polyps so they can recover.

I have lots of zoas and she doesn't go at them all the time, or even regularly, just on occassion I will notice that a colony up to maybe 50 polyps will be pruned back to 1 or 2.

+1 already have the hikari angel formula waiting

I make my own food for my angel.

He/She gets NLS pellets in the afternoon and prepared frozen mix in the evening. I make it about once every 6 weeks. I get clam, oyster, squid, nori (seaweed), white fish, shrimp, and crab meat....put it in a food processor. Add a little water, then flatten it into a sheet. Toss in the freezer and cut into pieces. Super easy, healthy, and the angel has never looked better. The fish go nuts.
