Feeding Damselfish

Good morning!

So I just finished cycling 3 55 gallon tanks and introduced a couple lemon damsels and a blue devil damsel into each tank. They are thriving so far but I will be going out of town for the weekend and wanted to know if they will be ok not being fed for those 2 days. There isn't much algae buildup yet so I was just wanting to check. Thank you.

Give them generous feedings leading up to the weekend and you'll be fine. There won't be too much for them to pick on for those days, but they should make it through.

I would go the other way on that if it were me. I would feed normally and just let them get a little hungry. You run the risk of polluting the tank with excess food. Much better that they be a little hungry than swimming in toxic water.

+1

I wouldn't have added any damsels! lol. But now that you have them, 2 days without feeding is perfectly fine. Mine have gone longer.

For long term though, I would get a cheap auto feeder. I feed frozen in addition to the pellets, but it allows a consistent feed, whether I'm home or not.

I forgot the part about no damsels!

+1 to a auto feeder if you will be gone frequently for more than a couple days. DO NOT, however, get one right before you leave and think it's going to work perfectly right out of the box. That is a sure=fire way to end up with a tank full of food and dead fish.

I would get the eheim auto feeder if it were me.

adding damsels first has some problems. They're territorial. OTOH, the lemons and blue devil are fairly placid, and don't take as much room as some.

Bingo! lol

Yea I suggest the eheim too! That's what I have, and it works very well. However, the hole is to big for my use; so you'll want to fine tune it or you will have a tank full of food, like billdogg was saying.

Well, obviously don't overfeed so much that you pollute your tank.

I believe sde1500's point was to not worry about feeding over the weekend, and give them a good meal before you leave.

Giving them a "good meal" the day/night before isn't an issue. But 2 days without feeding for a damsel is fine. They often ship/transport/acclimate for longer periods.
