ok quick question...what type of shrimp do you feed an anemone? I know i've read "shrimp" but there are a lot of kinds. What kind of shrimp? I'm assuming not the cocktail ones that I eat for dinner...but seriously which types of shrimp. He's an average size (about 4inches in diameter) and doing well...i've tried feeding mysis shrimp but i'm not sure he's closing in time before it slips out through his bulbs and into the current. Any advice always appreciated.

Actually the cocktail ones you eat for dinner. You just want them to be fresh, precooked, without any processing. You can get them at the seafood counter in a grocery store, or in an Asian food market--here in L.A. I can get them with their heads still on them.

really?? just make sure they're fresh?? i guess i never really thought that they could be used...but i spose. anything else? or is that a good start...

Yeah, when people refer to feeding shrimp they are referring to the kind of shrimp people eat, sometimes called table shrimp--unless they specifically say brine or mysis. You can also feed scallops and squid that you find in the seafood section. Fresh salmon is also a nutritous food and my H. magnificas like it, but my RBTA's are less eager to eat it. Again, I suggest fresh (not packaged as that would likely have some processing--salt or preservatives or whatever). When I buy scallops or shrimp, I usually just buy 4 or 5 and the guy behind the counter looks at me like, huh? Then I explain, I want them for an aquarium and then they get it.

If u buy shrimp from the grocery store, make sure you rinse it well in tank water or ro/di water, as they can contain phosphates.
I am lucky enough to live on the gulf coast & have lots of choices of fresh stuff. Although, I have found that my nems love silversides (tiny fish, alsmost like a sardine). You should be able to to buy these @ you lfs. Best of luck!
