Fianlly ..75 Gallon w/ Pictures Of Course

Today's update: The clowns seem to be doing pretty good. The males just loves playing in the current. Weird thing though, they're not eating. Hopefully they're still just nervous from the move.

Yeah, give them a little time. Be careful not to pollute your tank trying to get them to eat!

I'm sorry that you have such a rough start with your tank.

Don't understand why you take the two dead snails as of source nutrient for the algae bloom. But well...I think you should pay more attention to your phosphate levels, probably your dry rock was part of the source.

I just started my new build and let me tell you, after I hose off all the dust of my dry rocks, I place them in a tub of RO/DI water. I checked the water using my Hanna phosphate checker and the first day register zero phosphate reading, then by day five read 0.07. Quite a difference!

I'll check levels again this weekend and do a 100% water change. Hopefully I can get rid of the phosphates from the rock before I use them in my display.

Hahah I'll try, I do like to overfeed a little though. Hence the oversized skimmer and bio pellets but I'm just feeding as much as I do everyday, the clowns will get there.

Nice tank. How is your durso standpipe and return working out?

There were some hiccups at first but now everything seems to be working good. The pipes I got were messed up, the drain had two holes drilled in it right below the elbow for what I assumed was a siphon break but there's an air hose sticking out of the top which also serves as a siphon break.

Then the return, they drilled a hole right at the corner of the elbow which was above the water level in the overflow so it would make noise and splash everywhere but I fixed that and the holes in the drain with some plugs.

Just some advice, build your own drain and return. The ones you get in a package are no good. Well at least not the ones I got.

Yea this tank was a PITA in the beginning but I took things one step at a time and finally I'm good to go.

Wow that is a huge difference. The rock I used was actually all cured. The person I got it off had it sitting in a tub with a heater and powerhead for the last few months. I think the rocks had some phosphates stored in them so when I provided light GHA started blooming. The reason I thought snails may have contributed as well is because decaying snails cause ammonia to increase which just fuels the algae but I've been doing small 5g water changes every 2-3 days to get this algae under control.

It's going to be two weeks with the bio pellets tomorrow so slowly that should help as well.

So update for today: The coral beauty came down with pop eye, I treated it with epsom salt so let's see what happens by morning. Other than that, everything else is going good.

Bio pellet update (day 15): Bio pellets are still going at half the recommended dosage. The GHA is still there but I manually removed much of it and the good thing is that it's not growing back in the areas where I removed it.

How's the CB doing?

He's doing better, the swelling on the eye seems to have gone down a bit but I only administered half the dosage because I didn't want it to affect the salinity too much. So I'm going to administer the rest right now and hopefully it'll be gone completely by the end of the day.

The pop on the CB has completely subsided, if you catch it early and it's not bacterial, then Epsom salt treatment is the way to go.

Other than that, I moved the rest of my corals over to the larger tank, for now I only have a pic of my monti cap:

And an FTS:

Don't have a close up of the birdsnest or some of the frags. I'll try to get those tomorrow.

Thanks man, I tried hard keeping it round, but I chipped it a bit in the move.

If you're talking about the large piece, that's a bird's nest coral (Seriatopora hystrix). It needs some grooming, I just let it grow in my old tank while I was setting this one up so it doesn't have the nicest shape but it grew.

That birds nest is a very nice pice. Sorry I have not posted in a while. Tank looks good just get a good clean up crew

Thanks, that piece is actually starting to bleach a little, I think might be due to too much light. In my old tank, I was only running 2x24W T5s and now it's under 4x54W T5s.

I did add 12 hermits just a couple days ago so they're working hard.

Have you been able to manage the hair algae yet?

Yea, I manually removed most of it. The rest of it is turning brown and dying away or getting eaten by my snails. So it should be gone completely in the next week or so.

Update for today: Here are some pics of my new livestock acclimating!

And a crappy pic of the fish:

The bag in the back (closer to the stand) has 3 carberryi anthias (40% off), the other bag just has a cleaner shrimp. I wanted to get so much more live stock but I didn't wanna shock the system.

Here's a closer picture of the zoa frag I got today, they're MUCH brighter orange/red in real life:

If someone can identify them, that'd be great.

How did the fish acclimation go? I love those zoos! Where'd you get the livestock?

Also wondering if you are going to move the birds nest, or perhaps raise or screen your lights?

I glued it down and I sort of do like the placement so I'm going to raise the lights and hopefully that helps. If not, I'm just going frag what I can and re-grow it before it bleachers or RTNs.

I got the livestock at this store in Markham, Ontario called Sea U Marine. They were having an anniversary sale so all fish, shrimp and corals were 40% off and the food was 20% off so I got this zoa frag, the 3 anthias, a cleaner shrimp and cubes of PE Mysis Shrimp for $110. Normally these fish alone are $59/fish.

The acclimation for the fish was tedious because of the larger quantity of water, took about 2 hours two match the SG with my DT but within at first all the fish went into hiding but within just a few hours, they started eating everything except pellets.

I'll have a video up soon.

WoW...What's the hurry? You really want to stock up this tanks fast...

Can see very well in the picture, But those don't look like Zoanthids to me. Looks more like a Flower Pot or a Red Gonipora.

I might be wrong....

The reason I actually got the livestock today is because of the sale and the last addition was about 2 weeks ago. I had actually been looking for these anthias for a while now and couldn't pass up the opportunity but from here on I'm going to wait 3-4 weeks between additions or probably longer.

Here's a video of the anthias eating the flakes:

The anthias look great! Maybe I will reconsider them for my tank. I am a bit wary, though, of drip-acclimating bagged fish, although not as much so with ones right from the LFS. Sk8r, I believe, posted a thread on just how fast ammonia levels rise once the bag is opened. But I think this pertains more to fish that have been bagged for a while (ie shipping time).

Yea I can see how that would be true, of course the fish would expel waste and in such a small quantity of water the ammonia level would go up.

I picked my fish up personally from a store about an hour and 15 minutes away, with traffic on the way back, I was home in 2 hours plus 2 hour acclimation time. My tank has 0 ammonia so I'm assuming after the drip was started the ammonia concentration would go down. :hmm2:
