Fighting Tangs!

I did something stupid. I put a new Purple Tang in my 125 with an existing yellow tang already in there. I thought the Purple Tang was a bit larger than my Yellow but, it turns out they are the same size. Needles to say the yellow tang is going to town on the new guy. I cannot catch either fish. Any advice for me besides the fact that I shouldn't have put them in together to help save the Purple?

You will be able to catch one of them easily soon ;)

Other than that without tearing apart everything they won't get a long till one goes

I caught the purple tang and have him in a fish breeder. 5x6 net cage basically. Even if I get a Purple tang that is much bigger than the yellow you don't think I can have both in the tank?

with purple and yellow tangs it doesnt matter what size they are I've had 3" yellows trash a massive 10" yellow, it's just they way those B**tards are

So now that I have the purple safe. What tang if any can I put in the tank? I have a Yellow and a Vlamingii (doesn't care about the purple).

I'd keep the purple and trade the yellow for another one. If you can trade the yellow soon, like tomorrow, you may be able to put the purple and the new yellow in at the same time. I'd keep the purple in temporary quarters until you can put both in at same time. You won't have a tank ownership issue then and they may get along.

set a day aside......go buy a little mickey mouse fishing pole and put a piece of food on the hook and go fishin my friend!!!!!!!

hahaha jk jk jk dont do that!!

They make fish traps...we used to sell them at quality aqua in denver when i worked there

Can you see it sleeping at night? If so that's always a good time to catch them because their in such a daze. Otherwise.... good luck. You can try the fish hook as a last resort and it will be fine. Just make sure you hook the right fish!

lol i was kidding rex!!!! although i know some ppl actally have done that. Pretty lame i think but like you said its a definite last resort

Its normally harder on you then it is the fish, at least with a yellow tang which are hardy. Also consider when they fight with each other they do a lot more damage then your fish hook. Make sure you are carful handling a tang. There call Sergeon tangs for a reason

I watched Todd pull out a Blue Jaw trigger out of Eric D's big tank in about 30 seconds. He uses a barbless hook for fly fishing and it was quick and painless. I didn't belive it, until I saw it with my own eyes. You stress the fish, plus all the other inhabitants, more by chasing them for 45 minutes than using the hook.

I think the only drawback with the tangs is their small mouth and the way they barley pick at food vs. swallow it like triggers do.

I cought my Twin Spot Wrass with a small hook and mysis in about 10 seconds.

I also cought a clownfish using a clear jar.

You can't have tangs together. There are exceptions, like the hippo tang can be with either the yellow or purple, but that is because he is a different shape.

And if you have a powder blue, it better be the only tang in your tank, way too many problems with those ich magnets, just best have them as the only tang.

Oh, and if you have a big tank, you can have MANY tangs together, do the school effect, but a few is bad.

i have a yellow, purple, tomini and hippo living happily ever after in the 90. As they outgrow the 90, they'll move into the 125 in the other room.

I find different shape and different color are safer ways to pick tangs.

Mine for the most part are well behaved. Including my powder blue and yellow. The powder blue is a bit unhappy that I just put a baby vlamingi in with them but..... he didnt beet it to the point I had to take it out. that makes for 6 tangs in a 150.... soon to be a 500G...
