Figures the corals I like the best SPS hard corals - are the hardest to keep...

I have many years in the fish only with live rock saltwater aquarium "hobby"...

But with live rock only - there is just something really missing.

I see these beautiful reef aquariums with awesome fish - but the thought of being a beginner coral lover scares me.

And to make matters worse - the corals I like the best, SPS Acropora - are the hardest to keep...

And some of the saltwater fish I love - are not totally coral safe...

Then you have to chose between those fishes and corals. The main difference with the softies and Sps are lights and calcium, alk and mag levels. Maintain those and you will be able to keep anything.

Do all your research and then just start off with a couple proven, hardy frags and see how it goes. Reef safe is also an interesting term. Some fish will eat LPS but leave SPS alone. Some fish will eat snails and shrimp but will leave SPS alone. I've got a few angels that don't touch my SPS but would decimate some of the corals I have in my frag tank.

That is one beautiful Red Sea Regal Angel you have there!

really not as hard as everyone makes them seem....

Well, yes and no. No, not necessarily hard to keep, but they are not very forgiving in general. Sudden spike or drop in Alk, temp, etc, can ripe out a tank pretty quick.

fair enough.
basically if you stay on top of your $#%^ they are not that hard
not for lazy reefers or people who like to skip water changes

While success comes from experience and failure... Having the right equipment and educating yourself beforehand makes a huge difference. In the long run its not that difficult, but you do have to anticipate making some mistakes.
