Filter Sock are they needed?

Does anyone use a filtration sock in their sump? Long story short we had a maintenance guy taking care of our 100 gallon reef and he was doing a bad job. I question everything that he put on our tank and I am wondering if I should do away with the sock as it could become a nitrate factory.

It only becomes a nitrate factory if you don't clean it out on a regular basis. Remember - if it's isn't caught by the sock, it's probably somewhere else in your tank.

What would you consider a regular basis?

I change my filter sock every 3-5 days depending on how quickly it starts to clog up. I just run them through the sanitary cycle in my washer with a little bit of bleach and it gets them nice and clean.
I think they are important to use. I didn't use them on my previous tank and my sump was always full of detritus that I never got around to cleaning out. Now that I use a filter sock I don't have that problem anymore and I'm sure that my water is cleaner because of it.

No sock here.

The detritus that escapes the skimmer goes into the fuge where it feeds the bristleworms and pods.
