filter sock for drain?

I would like to add some kind of filter sock onto the end of my drain for a week or so to pull out all of the extra crude floating in the water since I cant use filter floss.

I would assume this is a common item to be found in our hobby?

yeah that is a good idea. I was even thinking of stuffing it full of filter floss just to get the water really clean. (there is a bunch of mud particles in my water from when I had fiji mud it in.

why not just use a filter sock rather than a media bag filled with floss??

if u use a sock then remember to keep it clean and not let it sit for weeks unattended to collect waste and leach back into the system. they can be a very useful tool.

Maybe I'm missing something and you're asking a completely different question, but you can get the filter sock with drawstring as well if you do not already have a filter sock holder.

Re: filter sock for drain?

mechanical filtration is a good thing IMO but a filter sock isn't.
Simply set up a perforated basket with some micron floss and have your drains dump into it. If the floss gets full it will overflow the basket rather than clog up your drains and cause a flood like filter socks are prone to do.

If a sump is designed properly, it shouldn't cause a flood.

The filter sock holder should be about 2" or so below the top edge of the sump. Right above the sock and facing the next compartment should be an opening where water can overflow and return to the sump or flows down into the next compartment.

Again, perhaps I'm missing things but I run filter sock with sump and never had a flood even though when I get lazy, water does overflow out of the sock.

good point- but these guys were talking about tying something onto the end of their drains.

I still like my idea better than a filter sock and holder.
The basket cost me a buck at the dollar store and the filter floss was $2. It takes a second to glance at the filter and see how it's performing. You can't see inside filter socks.

Hah hah, can't really argue with DIY projects on cost effectiveness... perhaps socks are more aesthetically pleasing. And speaking of which, the avatar of your tank looks amazing.

Well, back on topic.

yes, and thanks for the compliment. I think that we both agree that tying a filter sock onto the end of your drain or having crude in your aquarium is a bad thing :)

Question: What about using women's panty hose instead of a media bag? I have used them in the past as media bags, but never thought of using them like a filter sock. Whadda ya think??

are they the black fishnet type :p

Noooooooooooooo..... I guess I set myself up for that, right?? Just the standard, everyday type.. That's as specific as I can be when describing them, seeing as how I'm a male...

I don't really plan to run the filter sock all the time. I just want to run it for a good week or so during this initial set up phase to get all of that fiji mud out.

And perhaps sporadically in the future.

And I have to use a sock, my drain is underwater, so it cant splash down into anything.

I honestly don't know what a filter sock looks like, I just assume it looks similar to a media bag.

I'm going to try the media bag with the filter floss. Filter floss is what I wanted to use to begin with, and now this just gives me a way of doing it.

dont obstruct the drain pipe by tying a mediabag to it with floss instead. Thats a sure fire way to plug youre drain and have problems.

Gary you really dont like filter socks? I dont use one all to often but I have and know many that use them with good results. As long as you clean them every few days and keeping them clean is key-I think they can help.

ps- i do like the basket idea with the floss. if you have the space and can position it like you have it then it appears to be a good application.

The media bag with filter floss is not something I would run all the time, I can see how it would be a bad idea.

But to give me a quick strip and clean of all of this extra crude in my tank, its a nice little trick.
