Filter sock for sump?

The overflow water from my tank is prefiltered by a filter sock before it enters my sump. The problem is, this sock clogs to the point of overflowing in only a few days.

I think the hole size in the sock I have may be too small. What is the optimal hole size (microns) and where can I buy one that won't clog up so easily???

Personally I would take it off. Why grab crud only to have it muddy the system when you want it to be removed by the skimmer? The socks are fine when you need them as a band-aid to control microbubbles or application specific needs, but otherwise I see no benefit to them other than something else to keep up on.

If it wasn't clogging up then it would be working I'm torn on the filter sock issue myself. Mine go about 3-4 days before they're nasty. I own about 5 of them so when they're all dirty I just throw them into the washing machine on hot with no soap. They're always full of 'pods so I wonder if I would be better off to remove them as maybe I'm doing more harm than good.

remove it before you have major overflow issues!!!!

if you want to clean the water use filter wool!!!!!

The only reason I like using a sock is it keeps my sump clean.

I just don't like that it clogs up so quickly.

Maybe I'll just remove it.

BTW - once it clogs water just overflows into the sump -- it doesn't cause a flood (luckily).

You should be changing them every day. I think 100 micron is a good size, that's what I'm using, and I'm happy with them.

I use 100 micron, changed every 3 days. One overflow feeds the skimmer and the other goes thru the sock. No problems and a clean sump.

I was using them until a recent incident.

I came home to find the skimmer had produced enough foam to fill the sump - apparently there was soap residue in the filter sock, after washing it, that it affected the water when I put it back in.

Bad part is, I didn't use soap when I washed them.

I just took it out.
