filter sock help-where are they placed?

I've been using the HOT magnum hang on the back filter for carbon. I know many use a filter sock. Essentially, what is it...nothing more than a mesh bag with carbon in it sitting in a sump? Any pictures by chance? I'd like to do away with seeing extra equipment.

Can you put carbon in these things to replace the hang on filter?

Won't work well. Water will flow AROUND the carbon.

How exactly do they fit? I've been reading and they all seem to be 7" or bigger in diameter. What does someone do with a 1" drainpipe into the sump?

Some sumps come with a sock holder, or just make one, or just hang it with a zip tie and a hook somewhere like I did. Have the top of the sock out the water a litle and make your return plumbing empty into it. I'll get a pic of my gheto yet functional sump in a sec. If my cam batteries are good.

Personally, I won't use them because they also trap the zooplankton that my corals feed from. Also, until you clean the sock, any trapped detritus is decaying and producing nutrients for the nasty's of the tank. If the tank is unsocked, these detritus particles are part of the zooplankton and much can be eaten by the corals and micro life of the tank.
