Ya dont need them. I do need them. I preefure to to change socks and do laundry rather than clean out my sump. I do have a very high flow sump and use the felt ones to reduce the bubbles from my overflow pipes.
Just a quick question. Is it necessary to install a filter sock in a sump/refugium if you have a protein skimmer?

Unless you are Crockett and Tubbs socks are only necessary when wearing shoes...![]()
Psh, socks are totally optional with shoes too.
Um... no.. no they aren't...
Socks + sandals = optional (used to be you would get beat up for that but somehow thats allowed now).. Not sure which basketball player got that one acceptable again...
But socks + shoes = mandatory according to commonly accepted hygiene rules of 2018.
You may have an old copy of the rules in front of you at this time.. Please note that hygiene rule updates are free to anyone...
I know I shouldn't judge people by how they dress but I immediately revoke the man card when I see socks with sandals.

While every tank is different, socks certainly are not needed. I use to run them 24/7 changing them out every other day.
In the last year I removed them and only run them a few hours after maintenance day. I have found my fish and corals as well as overall tank health, is much better since taking them off. Side benefit, I have millions of pods now(their not getting caught in the socks all the time).
