Nope. Filter socks are simply mechanical filtration and are not a requirement.

They are not related, but a filter sock is good at removing fine debris/detritus as long as you keep it clean once a week.

I ran filter socks when I first got my new setup running. Quickly found out they were a pain to keep clean, and a real chore (for me anyhow) So I removed them. I'll sometimes put them in after a WC, but only leave them in a few hours. They are not a necessity

Agree they are not required however I provisioned for them in my sumps design. I run them on occasion as needed such as doing some maintenance or happen to stir something up in the tank. I also put them them in when I refill with NSW to catch any debris that might be in my mixing tank.

Agree they're not required, but really just personal preference.
I used them when I first started and hated the amount of work that went into changing/cleaning them when I'm using coin operated laundry machines.
Now I only use them when I know I'm going to make a mess. (I put them on during a fluconazole treatment to catch the dead hair algae)

Used them, disliked them, removed them. I don't clean my sump either. Let the gunk build, things are growing in it now. I have some that I put in on occasion to siphon my sand bed through without removing water from the tank, it siphons down to my sump through my sock and back to the tank.

A sock isn't necessary... a sump/refugium isn't necessary and neither is a skimmer.... I know...I know.... BOOM... Mind Blown.. :blown:
Unless you are Crockett and Tubbs socks are only necessary when wearing shoes...

Um... no.. no they aren't...
Socks + sandals = optional (used to be you would get beat up for that but somehow thats allowed now).. Not sure which basketball player got that one acceptable again...
But socks + shoes = mandatory according to commonly accepted hygiene rules of 2018.
You may have an old copy of the rules in front of you at this time.. Please note that hygiene rule updates are free to anyone...

I know I shouldn't judge people by how they dress but I immediately revoke the man card when I see socks with sandals.
IMO, it's not a revocation offense, but does require either an accompanying NERD or AARP card.

Skimmer and Filter work differently. My tank has both, the filter sock collect a lot of dirt in my tank. It's worthy to use it.

While every tank is different, socks certainly are not needed. I use to run them 24/7 changing them out every other day.
In the last year I removed them and only run them a few hours after maintenance day. I have found my fish and corals as well as overall tank health, is much better since taking them off. Side benefit, I have millions of pods now(their not getting caught in the socks all the time).

I have been considering this myself. Only time I kick stuff up is during maintenance and have been curious on the overall effectiveness of it the rest of the time. Ive been changing them out every 3 days or so for cleaning which does get quite annoying doing laundry all the time. Do you notice any uptick of particals or anything floating in the water column when not running them?
