My tank has been cloudy for some time now; I though it migh thave been the sandsifting goby stirring up to much sand but I started thinking that since I dont have anything in my sump and detritus seems to be collecting this could be the problem.....so I was thinking I getting a filter sock. Any thoughts??? And does anyone have any spare socks they want to sell? I have flex tubing that kind of just lays in the sump if that makes any difference.

I use socks and they work but they are a maintenance pain. I have two sets so one sets in tank and other gets washed in washing machine. I made my own holder but got the socks from Bulk Reed supply.

pics arent showing up....i have an old sock that has been sitting outside for months in rain water and old sand and rock would I be able to use that if I washed it in the washing machine with no soap or bleach?

I wash mine with soap and bleach. I have a front load washer and I run them on the tub clean cycle since it uses lots of water. I use maybe 1/3 cup bleach and the sensitive skin soap for babies maybe 1/4 of the cap. Then I just air dry them

For me filter sock is a must. I I get lazy and not use one stuff builds up and clogs my reactors ect. Get a big one and mesh style so they don't clog as easy.

Cloudyness maybe non related but
Do you run gfo, carbon, do you dose how old is tank.

I run large 7 inch felt filter sock on my 40 breeder. I have a spare that I switch out each week. I wash them in the washer machine with hot water only. Comes clean, mostly. I don't use reactors, just drop GFO and Carbon in baggy in my filter sock.

Just got back from GQ and picked up a filter sock so hopefully it helps...might have to try dropping a chemipure bag in IF it does work

I doubt a chemi pure bag will do much. The reason I ask about the gfo is if gfo grinds to hard it will make your water milky and looks exactly like a bacterial bloom. The carbon in it might help a little depending on what the culprit is. What does the water look like?

I don't use soap but use only bleach. Wouldnt want soap residue in my tank. Its a waste to run a washer for just one sock. Buy like 5 so you can wash 4 at a time and maybe a fish towel or something.

Negative on using soap because soap residue can get in your tank still. I just use hot water and rinse it until it is clean and then air dry it, I rotate between 8 socks

I guess the best way to explain it is it looks like I moved sand around. Its a bunch of particulates. Its not to bad but its very annoying to look at
