Filtration for 20g?

Hey, I just bought me a 20 gallon long tank to start my first saltwater aquarium. Now I'm looking into filtration for it. I though doing a sump/refugium type setup which would probally be the best, but I'm not for sure if I would be able to incorporate that into my room. It's going on top of a dresser. I've been looking at the hang-on filters like the Bak-Pak, but it is to tall for a long tank. I also saw the Red Sea Prizm skimmer & I saw some good reviews on it. Could anyone please advise me on this topic?

Hi Daniel,

When I went sumpless with my 20L a couple of years ago, I fit a large CPR hang on fuge on the back, no problems. If you can line the back edge of the aquarium up with the back edge of the dresser, you should have the space necessary for a bakpak. Also, I would look at the Tunze nano skimmer that sits in tank... its only like 2.5 inches wide so it wouldn't look hideous in your tank. I've never owned a Prizm, but I have only heard bad things about it.

Some of the best filtration around is a light bioload coupled with a fair amount of biological filtration. Live Rock, Deep Sand Beds, and Macroalgae are some of the best options available. Getting a skimmer is well worth it, too. Everything else is pretty much toys with their own benefits and drawbacks.

I have a Prizm and a CPR. The Prizm is WAY smaller and also quieter. The CPR sits in a box while the Prizm is on my 20H reef. They both do a decent job once adjusted properly. Obviously neither are as good as a Remora, but what you gonna do?

Everything I hear about the Remora is great, but it is pricey. The Prizm might be the way I go, I've read a few reviews where they say they're good. Also I don't plan on stocking the tank heavily at all & Christmas is close, so I could always get a better set-up then. I have the remora, its OK, I also hve a euroreef. I love the Euroreef it is way more proficient and is a lot easier to maintain. The Remora has a stupid collection cup that requires you to run your finger into a small hole just to keep it clear to continue skimming properly.

Just a thought because I'm thinking of doing something similar.

What if you had the refugim on the back, along with a HOB filter? Aqua Clear, the appropiate size.
